Important Information

Good afternoon Blackhawks!

I hope you have had a relaxing summer. We are very excited to serve our community and students virtually through the first quarter of the school year. Our teachers are busy planning interactive lessons that will help create community and also address the academic standards our students will need to succeed at the next level. Please understand that the virtual learning model your child will receive during the fall will look very different from the home learning model they received in the spring. We have had the entire summer to plan for new learning and social emotional support.

So, what are the enrollment options? - Deer Valley Online Academy - mostly asynchronous (flex time) learning, and Desert Mountain Virtual Learning - mostly synchronous (real time) learning.

What are the differences between the two options for students?

1. Deer Valley Online Academy - Mostly Asynchronous Learning

  • Asynchronous Learning is learning using recorded instruction and written/verbal direction using Canvas - an online learning platform.
  • This approach allows working parents a more flexible learning environment for their children at home with very limited live meeting requirements.

2. Desert Mountain Virtual Learning - Synchronous Learning

  • Synchronous Learning is learning live (online) with the classroom teacher. Teachers will have a set schedule for students to log on for live instruction, small group instruction, and intervention and/or enrichment.
  • This schedule will follow a full school day.

What are the similarities between Desert Mountain Virtual Learning & Deer Valley Online Academy?

  • Both programs will use the Canvas learning platform.
  • Both programs will utilize the same pacing, homework, and assignments.
  • Both programs will assign students to classrooms taught by certified Desert Mountain teachers. DVOA students and families will still be members of the Blackhawk Family!

· I will be sending out additional information on class schedules and assignments early next week. I will also send information regarding our Back to Learning/Meet the teacher virtual event that we are hosting on Thursday, July 30th.

· Every Desert Mountain School student, whether enrolled in the Deer Valley Online Academy or the Desert Mountain Virtual option, will receive a Chromebook, or for Kindergarten, an iPad. We will be distributing these devices and other materials (including 2019-20 yearbooks and spring pictures if ordered) on Wednesday, July 29th, Thursday, July 30th, and Friday, July 31st. Due to county and district regulations we are required to ensure social distancing, and all visitors to the campus must wear a mask. With that said, we are attaching a link to a sign-up genius appointment scheduler. Please follow the directions below to sign-up for material and device pick-up. If you cannot make it during these days and times, please call Patti Atchley or Charla Hostetler at 623-445-3500 to make alternative arrangements.
