Onward: November- Take Care of Yourself

From p. 148, November:

For new teachers, the stretch between mid-October and Thanksgiving is the most emotionally challenging phase of the school year. The New Teacher Center (NTC) calls this phase the "disillusionment period," when the excitement, hope, and adrenaline of the new school year have worn off..." Furthermore, by November, kids haven't yet demonstrated their learning in a way that matches our output of energy and effort. We can't yet see the results of all that hard work...

November can be a low point for experienced educators as well. As we roll into November, what would happen if we devoted time and energy to tend to our physical and emotional needs? What if during this time, teachers supported each other to take walks, eat nutritious lunches and sleep? Isn't it worth focusing on our self-care for a month if there's a chance we could prevent illness, feel happier and serve children more effectively?

These words resonated with me, and I think they might for you as well. As we go into Thanksgiving break next week I hope you will not only enjoy time with friends and family, but also have an opportunity for self-care. Thank you for the incredible work you've done this first trimester of the school year! Enjoy the much-deserved break next week!

-Kristy

Elementary Report Cards

At the request of elementary teachers, we are extending the first-trimester report card window to Friday, December 10th. We hope that this additional time will alleviate pressure to complete report cards over the Thanksgiving Break and provide additional time/flexibility to complete them.

Hour of Code, December 6-10

Consider being a part of this worldwide movement where students participate in an hour of coding during the week of December 6-10.

What is the Hour of Code?

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. Check out the tutorials and activities. (Both digital and analog ideas and resources!)

Governor Newsom's Announcement on the Vaccine Mandate

Last Friday, I shared with you a few facts regarding what we know at this time regarding Governor Newsom’s announcement on the vaccine mandate (see attached). It’s the same message within the attached, nothing has changed.

Yesterday, the Emergency Temporary Services (ETS) on Vaccination and Testing was officially filed in the Office of the Federal Register and it became effective today. In regards to testing and vaccination, as of today, we are in compliance with the current federal and state standards. Should there be a change we will address in a timely manner.

Plumas-Eureka State Park Virtual Interactive Program

Hello There! My name is Darcy Page and I am the park interpreter at Plumas-Eureka State Park. I am hoping to share and advertise a virtual interpretive program to teachers within your district. Because Plumas-Eureka (Johnsville, CA) is in your district's backyard, I wanted to be sure to advertise with local school districts first. Please feel free to share this information within your school and wider community. This program is completely free to the public and intended as a resource for schools and teachers. With educators working extra hard to make up for lost time, this program is designed as a "virtual field trip" when in-person field trips may not be feasible. The program can be scaled to meet the needs of K-12.

Check out https://www.ports-ca.us/PORTSon-demand/plumas-eureka-state-park to sign up or learn more. Thank you for all you do! https://www.ports-ca.us/PORTSon-demand/plumas-eureka-state-park
