We are excited to discuss Yoga for Healing with Dr. Carol Horton and hear from three multiple myeloma survivors how yoga helped them and continues to help them through their treatment journey.
Carol Horton, Ph.D., is the author of Yoga Ph.D.: Integrating the Life of the Mind and the Wisdom of the Body, and co-editor of 21st Century Yoga: Culture, Politics, and Practice. She holds a doctorate in Political Science from the University of Chicago, served on the faculty at Macalester College, and has extensive experience as a research consultant specializing in issues affecting low-income children and families. A Certified Forrest Yoga teacher, Carol teaches yoga to women in the Cook County Jail with Yoga for Recovery, and at Chaturanga Holistic Fitness in Chicago. She is a co-founder of the Socially Engaged Yoga Network (SEYN), a new organization dedicated to to supporting yoga teachers, community organizations, and other stakeholders committed to sharing the benefits of yoga with underserved communities in the Chicagoland area. Lisa has been practicing yoga for about 20 years. She is a trained yoga teacher. While her first love is Ashtanga yoga, these days she is also into a nice daily hour and 45 min of Vinyasa flow along with meditation and breathing. She even did these in her room during her tandem stem cell transplants. She feels that yoga helps with the physical strength depleted by steroids which she has been on and off for three years. Yoga gives her flexibility and agility. The mental aspects helps to clam her down, stay present "in the moment". Lisa also teaches yoga at the cook county sheriff's women's justice program since 1998. In 2012 she formed the non for profit yoga for recovery to support this work at the the prison to ensure sustainability and build collaborations with other service yoga for the community. Yoga is part of her treatment to help her get to complete remission which she hopes is soon.
Carol Pepe
Carole Pepe spent over 25 years as a special educator and outdoor enthusiast. Carole found yoga in 1998, after an injury and the practice felt like a natural fit in exploring the physicality of asana as well as the connection of the self to the natural world. After a life-altering diagnosis of multiple myeloma in 2003, yoga became prominent in the heart of her healing process. In june 2010, she completed the 500 hour yoga teacher training program with an emphasis on therapeutics at Yoga Loka. She founded Yoga for Cancer Care offering cancer care classes, restore and renew classes, and outreach programs. She is also an assistant instructor for the teacher trainees at Yoga Loka.
