Math Professional Development
2016/2017
A Focus on Numeracy!
Elementary Professional Development
Math Recovery: Add+VantageMR® Courses 1 & 2
The Math Recovery professional development training is beneficial for anyone working in the area of mathematics, or supervising others who teach mathematics. Teachers who are working with kindergarten through fifth-grade children are encouraged to take Add+VantageMR® Professional Development courses. It is also beneficial for teachers at the middle school level who work with students who have fallen at least two years behind grade level standards.
Math Recovery: Add+VantageMR® Course 1
At Add+VantageMR® Course 1, teachers will learn about Math Recovery® assessment where the focus is on a continuum of learning in relationship to the Learning Framework in Number. Add+VantageMR® then addresses how to analyze the assessments and make instructional choices that are appropriate for students’ current understandings. The assessments are diagnostic in that they also aid in identifying areas of need for students.
Content addressed in Add+VantageMR® Course 1 includes:
· Number Words & Numerals
· Structuring Number
· Addition & Subtraction
Math Recovery: Add+VantageMR® Course 2
Once teachers have taken Course 1, then they can extend their own learning to include:
· Place Value Concepts
· Multiplication and Division Concepts
After completing both courses, teachers are able to confidently administer all five assessments and determine a student profile to guide day-to-day instruction for each student in such a way that the teacher has a clear picture of the student’s current understanding and the next step he or she needs to take.

Guided Math
Teachers today are expected to help a diverse range of learners reach complex levels of mathematical performance with deep understanding. It is crucial for teachers to identify and implement high-leverage practices that underlie teaching complex mathematical content to all students. A logical starting point is to develop a new structure for the math class – full of proven pedagogical strategies and practical ideas that will differentiate the learning opportunities for all students within their classroom. Developing a Guided Math classroom can provide a structured, practical way to teach differentiated math using small-group instruction, problem solving, and idea sharing while also encouraging student to be confident, deep thinkers. (This PD is geared toward elementary, but all grades are welcome.)
Dates: 11/9/16 or 3/15/17
Cost: $25 (includes lunch and manipulatives)
Number Talks
A Number Talk is an opportunity to bring the students together for a discussion of mathematical ideas. Using carefully crafted questions that encourage students to think deeply about the idea, students are the primary participants in the discussion. Participants in this session will learn to facilitate the dialogue, where students are the primary participants in the discussion. This session is geared toward elementary, but all are welcome. Topics include:
· Establishing a respectful ambience among students
· Encouraging the participation of all students
· Modeling the appropriate us of mathematical vocabulary
· Guiding students to recognize patterns and relationships
· And much more
Dates: 10/19/16 or 2/22/17
Cost: $25 (includes lunch and manipulatives)
Data Dialogues: Using the Collaborative Learning Cycle
In Lipton & Wellman’s collaborative learning cycle—a three-phase framework to grow learning cultures and guide productive community learning—the emphasis is on data and collaboration. District and school team members will delve into approaches that ignite shared responsibility for student learning using this model. This simple yet powerful protocol will equip teachers and administrators with the tools to effectively and efficiently use multiple measures of data to solve instructional or systemic problems to increase student learning.
Dates: 10/12/16 OR 1/11/17
Cost: $25
Elementary Mathematics Leadership Team
The purpose of this group is to motivate, and educate a collegial group of math leaders responsible for returning to their districts with quality information and opportunities. Our focus in 2016/2017 will be to convert our shared vision into a reality of consistently high levels of mathematics learning for all students.
Dates: 9/28, 12/7, 2/1, 3/22
Cost: free; meals not provided
SECONDARY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Building Numeracy in the Secondary Classroom
We are excited to welcome Pamela Harris to GISD in September! Pamela Weber Harris is the author of Building Powerful Numeracy for Middle & High School Students and Lessons & Activities for Building Powerful Numeracy. A former secondary mathematics teacher, Pam currently teaches at The University of Texas, is a K-12 mathematics education consultant, a T³ (Teachers Teaching with Technology) Instructor, and an author and coauthor of several professional development workshops. Pam presents frequently at local and national conferences. Her particular interests include numeracy, technology, assessment, and vertical connectivity in curricula in schools K-12.
Based on her books, this workshop focuses on building strategies that lead to reasoning with number. Students not only need to know their “facts,” but they also need to understand the mathematical properties and construct efficient, sophisticated strategies that lead to success in secondary content. Additionally, we will examine purposefully sequenced tasks with an eye toward our standards, examining teacher pedagogy, and incorporating mathematical habits of mind. Whether your students are initially learning these strategies or you wish they already had, you’ll be glad you came.
Date: Saturday, 9/24/16
Time: 8:00am – 3:00pm
Cost: $50 (includes lunch)
Numeracy Strategies for Middle and High School Students
As secondary math teachers, we're often frustrated by the lack of true number sense in our students. Solid research at the elementary level shows how to help all students become mathematically proficient by redefining what it means to compute with numbers. In this 3-day professional development, teachers will learn to use Pamela Weber Harris's resources on problem strings, and mathematical representations with their students to provide a repertoire of strategies to build numeracy and solve problems. This program includes a book and all materials. (Select Fall or Winter dates, not both)
Fall Dates: 10/5, 10/26, & 11/30
Winter Dates: 2/15, 3/1, & 3/29
Cost: $100 (incl. text)
Secondary Numeracy Extensions for Middle School Teachers and High School Teachers*
These workshops focus on classroom content. Teachers study a purposeful sequence of multiple-entry tasks including problem strings, and mini-lessons. The day includes analyzing high-leverage teacher moves, i.e. 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Discussions in Mathematics. Teachers study and discuss:
· What does it mean to sequence tasks, with development along a landscape of learning?
· What are high leverage teacher moves that teachers can implement to facilitate construction, structuring, and mathematizing?
· What are problem strings, math talk, and mini-lessons? Where do they fit in a purposeful curriculum? How do teachers plan and facilitate these lesson formats?
* “Numeracy Strategies for Middle and High School Students” is a prerequisite
