Text-to-Speech
It is important to note that when the iPad is reading to me, I am following along. This is not a passive event. I can't have the iPad read to me while I roam social media or fold a load of laundry. When I use the text-to-speech feature, I follow along. Multi-tasking is not an option.
3 WAYS TO ACCESS TEXT-TO-SPEECH
1. SPEAK SCREEN
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on General
- Tap on Accessibility
- Turn on Speak Screen
Once you've turned on Speak Screen, you can choose the voice you want to hear reading and you can set the speed at which the text is read.
To activate speak screen, swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to hear the content of the screen read aloud. Watch the video below to see and hear it in action.
2. VoiceOver
Following these 5 steps will allow you to activate VoiceOver by tapping the Home button 3 times.
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on General
- Tap on Accessiblity
- Tap on Accessibility Shortcut
- Tap on VoiceOver
To turn VoiceOver off, simply tap the Home button 3 times.
USING VOICEOVER
- Triple Tap Home button -- turns on VoiceOver
- Single Tap - The iPad will read aloud the item you've tapped.
- Single Tap + Two Finger Swipe -- the iPad will begin reading aloud from the item you tapped and will continue reading until stopped.
- Three Fingers -- to scroll through a page, use three fingers
3. SPEAK SELECTION
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on General
- Tap on Accessiblity
- Turn on Speak Selection
Once turned on, all you do to use the feature is to highlight text and choose the Speak option. Speak Selection can be used on web sites, Kindle books, iBooks, and even PDFs in Notability.
Choose a Voice and Speed
To change the speed at which the iPad reads go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech > Speaking Rate.
