Kindergarten
October 12th
Math
We will be wrapping up our first math unit next week. We have spent the week focusing on one less. Students should have an understanding of the number sequence and be able to quickly tell the number before (one less). They also should have an understanding that they do not need to recount objects to find the total if one object was taken away. They can just identify the number one less.
Sight Words
We have been practicing the sight words: and, the, like, I, a, in, at, & see. Please try to help your child read these words at home. When reading a story together pick one or two of these words to have your child find in the story. Whenever you get to these words see if your child can read it instead of you.
Handwriting
We have worked on letters O, o, and A this week. We will continue through curved letters next week. If you are able please practice proper pencil grip with your students. An easy practice activity is writing our first and last names (using upper and lower case letters)!
Science
We were so excited to be scientists and observe a real pumpkin! We had already learned the life cycle of a pumpkin last week, so we were eager to cut open our pumpkins. First, we used our senses to observe the outside of the pumpkin. Then, we cut into the pumpkin and got to "pull out its guts." Students described the slippery, gooey, sticky, cold, and wet insides of the pumpkin. We separated the seeds and recorded our observations.
Cold Weather
Remember that as the temperature drops students will need to come prepared for the cold weather. Please send heavy coats, gloves, and hats. Also, please practice putting on and zipping up these extra layers. Also keep the cold weather in mind for extra sets of clothing, many of the students have shorts and t-shirts in their backpacks which will leave them chilly!
iReady
In the Friday Folders today, we sent the initial scores from our first iReady assessment. Please do not be concerned with the scores if your child is 'approaching kindergarten", this is expected at this point in the year. We will discuss specific needs and progress at Parent Teacher Conferences in November.
