NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
September 6, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
Attendance throughout the year is very important. At NES, we honor special family time and memorable and unique opportunities for travel. We also know that students do get sick, especially as the weather turns colder. However, we also have to follow state compulsory attendance laws and BVSD policy around attendance.
As an elementary school, we excuse the first ten absences a child has. After ten missed days of school, we send home a letter notifying you that your child has missed that many days and we touch base to problem solve the absences if needed. After 13 days we send home a second form letter that requires we meet to devise an attendance contract to help support families in getting students to school more regularly. After 15 days of missed school, we may need to refer families to our district Attendance Advocate and look at further supports to get students to school.
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10 percent or more of a school year approximately 18 days a year, or just two days every month. Attendance is important at all levels, including preschool. Preschool students with good attendance develop good skills and habits to prepare for kindergarten. By third grade, children who missed too much of kindergarten and first grade will fall behind in reading. Chronic absenteeism in middle school is a warning sign that students are on a path to dropping out. In ninth grade, attendance is a better predictor than test scores that a student will leave before completing high school. Attendance is also an exclusionary factor for special education services, in which the student's team must separate potential disability label with lack of contacting instruction due to absenteeism.
There is a lot of research about how good attendance supports academic growth, positive peer relationships, and even high school graduation rates. If you’d like to learn more, please visit Attendance Works and see the attached flyer.
Have a great weekend,
Laurel

Child Assault Prevention
During the next few weeks, Nederland Elementary School will be participating in the Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Program. As parents concerned about the safety of your children, we hope you will participate in this program by attending this adult training. Parent participation is crucial for program success.
CAP’s mission is to prevent child assault by teaching children to recognize and deal with potentially unsafe situations (bullying, stranger abduction, & sexual assault). CAP also prepares adults who are a part of the child’s community (teachers and parents) to help children in this journey.
The success of the CAP program depends on the support of the school community. We encourage children to share their experiences and concerns with adults. It is so important that parents and school personnel be willing and able to respond to these concerns appropriately.
We invite you to attend the CAP Parent Training on September 19, 2019, from 5:30-7: 30 pm at Nederland Elementary School. Please make every effort to attend. This meeting is for adults only.
This presentation will be a comprehensive discussion of the following topics:
An overview of sexual assault issues & dynamics including:
Definitions and prevalence of sexual assault
Vulnerability, Blame, Denial
Myths & Facts of Victims & Perpetrators
Safety Tips and Tools regarding issues of Bullying, Stranger Awareness, Sexual Assault
Warning signs of possible victimization
Why children are vulnerable to assault & how to empower them
CAP’s successful prevention model to decrease children’s vulnerability to assault
A demonstration of the children’s classroom presentations
Question & Answer & Review of take-home materials for parents
In the days following this presentation, we will be conducting CAP classroom workshops at Nederland Elementary for Kindergarten-5th-grade students. Please attend this parent training so we can all help our children be Safe, Strong and Free! For additional information regarding the CAP program please visit their website at www.FrontRangeCAP.org

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social-Emotional Learning at NES (Sept 3-6, 2019)
Our brains process emotion 200-500 times faster than they process thoughts. (So it is natural that our child's first reaction to everything is emotional.) Our reptilian brain may throw us into what may seem like an unreasonable fight or flight mode if our feelings quickly grow in intensity. In these situations, our Lizard brain is in full control and our wise Wizard brain is offline. Whenever we are really upset, thinking negatively, reacting defensively, or blaming others for the situation, we are stuck in our downstairs "lizard brain". It takes years of practice to build the neural pathways that connect our wise, creative, empathetic, "thinking" brain to our emotions and impulsive reactions. This week, students learned how their brains function and how they can utilize the strategies learned in BrainWise classes to balance their nervous system and problem solve in challenging situations. Ask your child to tell you about the Wizard and Lizard parts of their brain.
When we parents understand how the brain works and is developing, it helps us ReThink our approach to Discipline. RSVP for next week's Mountain Strong Families presentation on Tuesday, Sept 10th (ann@teensinc.org). It focuses on developing your own effective and holistic discipline style.
