Should We Differentiate "Discipline?"
I have always been fascinated with different views on how to discipline whether it is from the lens of a parent, an educator, a judge, or law enforcement. We all have our individual biases that contain our ethics and views and ultimately lead to how we view this topic. These views come from how we were disciplined, what we learned from our mentor, and what others including the media have shown us to be the norm. I remember one statement that really shaped how I view this topic. It was in a class through St. Cloud State, taught by Dr. Greg Vandal. He started the class with the following statement written in huge letters on the board, "SAME IS NOT FAIR!" We proceeded to use the next three hours discussing what this means in schools. What it came down to for me was that each and every person's story and situation is unique to them. You cannot treat them all with a simple policy or rule. If our ultimate goal is to change the unwanted behavior for that student or adult, we must find the unique solution that fits that particular individual. This is truly doing "What's Best for Kids." I am so happy I work in a school where educators believe in this philosophy. Rather than ruling by intimidation and fear, they guide through positive relationships. Below is an article that really resonated with me on this topic this past month. Enjoy!
Student of Distinction
Congratulations to Alayna West for being our September Student of Distinction. Alayna has been a very strong leader in her time here at BCMS. She is involved in Student Council, Girls Swim and Dive, plays percussion in the band, and is a WEB leader. Thank you Alayna for being such a great representation for what BMCS stands for! Voting is now open for the October Student of Distinction. Look for an email from Lindsay today. Remember, every teacher gets to vote for one male and one female student each month.
