A collaborative team of professionals, led by Elkhart Middle School Title I Department works together to deliver targeted reading interventions aimed at developing the skills necessary to enhance reading and allow for increased academic success.
Step I: Identifying Potential R.I.S.E. Students
The first step of the program involves the middle school Title I Department, classroom teachers, building principal, At-Risk personnel and Migrant Program personnel to collaborate and determine the students in need of extra reading support. Together, they identify the students who are exhibiting challenges in reading through individual student FastBridge assessment results and/or through classroom teacher observations.
Step II: Student Referral to R.I.S.E.
Once a student has been referred to R.I.S. E. the R.I.S.E. Leader contacts parents and meets to discuss the reading intervention plan. Intervention plan will take place for 6 weeks.
Step III: R.I.S.E. & Intensive Intervention Plan & Monitor Individual Skill Development
An intensive 6 week plan is put in place. Every 2 weeks , progress monitoring is provided by the Title I teacher. The R.I.S.E. Leader meets with the student’s classroom teachers, Title I teacher and building principal to discuss further plans for the student. If the R.I.S.E Leader determines the student exhibits the skills necessary to enhance reading, the student is exited from the R.I.S.E Program. If the student does not exhibit the necessary skills to enhance reading, the R.I.S.E. Leader will notify the parents and discuss further referral.

After a student has exhibited the reading skills necessary to enhance reading and allow for increased academic success, the student will exit the program. If needed the Title I Department may provide in class support. R.I.S.E Leader will notify parents of the exit date.
