Mystery Book Study in ELA classes with AIG support
The final project is for the students to synthesize the information collected on their Suspect Logs and Clue Trackers to write a police report. Students will read informational texts about how to write police reports before drafting their own reports. They must write the report from the perspective of a character in the book who would have the information needed to complete the report.
During the course of the book study, students were focused on the following Common Core ELA Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.1 Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.3 Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot).
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.7.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds (e.g., alliteration) on a specific verse or stanza of a poem or section of a story or drama.

CSG and ESG: Seven Habits and "Fifty Things" Project
Students have been asked to practice presenting their posters to their families before doing so at school. While their poster will include fifty things, they will highlight only five for their in class presentation. This component supports Common Core ELA Speaking and Listening Standard 7.6 stating that students should "adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate."
Students will also be asked to self-reflect on their project.
Students were given three weeks to complete the project, with some time in class, and the rest at home. Supplies were also provided. ESG posters are due on Wednesday, November 18 and CSG posters are due Monday, November 23.
Here are the directions.
