Expansion: Deepen and Extend
Learning Innovation Marker Series: Edition 1
The LIM Newsletter Series
How does an individual expand their learning?
Learners continually engage new experiences and develop various ways to extend, deepen, and express their knowledge and skills by relating new, conceptual ideas to their current understandings. Time, attention, and a variety of resources/tools are used to acquire new ideas through a synthesis of prior/new experience, hands-on activities and reflective practices. By constructing knowledge this way, learners monitor their own progress and employ useful, efficient strategies that assist them in finding and filling ‘gaps in understanding’ to generate new knowledge.--drafted by the HS Tech Liaison Committee
Tooling Critical Thought
This resource covers a number of different innovation markers. Starting with purpose using Bloom’s taxonomy, this article examines the available digital tools that can be used to remember, understand, apply, analyze and evaluate. A nice guide for any learner looking to adapt something new and expand their thinking abilities.
Exploring the Essential
If you’re looking for strategies to get students thinking and wondering in active ways, read through this blog post. This post contains a set of strategies that can prompt students to think and wonder about the academic content from various perspectives. The ideas can easily be integrated with various digital tools if desired.
Visible Thinking
Promote deeper thinking when engaging multimedia through the use of the ‘See, Think, Wonder’ exercise. Through visible thinking exercises like this one, help students monitor their own understanding and develop strategies that encourage active learning. For more visible thinking strategies using the Socrative application (or any application or no device for that matter), click here to view. Better yet, click here to go to an incredibly resourceful site containing numerous similar visible thinking resources.
