Heartland Happenings - 11/6/2022
Notes From Ms. Johnson
Thanksgiving break is just around the corner and this week went REALLY fast for me. I actually spent two entire days in training at the district administrative building in a program that deals with creating successful processes and procedures - collaboratively - that improve the behavior and operation of organizations including employees and in our case - students. As a school we are committed to ensuring that we are providing the absolute best learning environment for our students and as students change, our processes must evolve as well! If you haven't already heard, we have implemented a new acknowledgement program at Heartland. It's called Heartland High Fives! Heartland High Fives are tangible acknowledgements (small slips of paper) that are earned by students who demonstrate our RISE expectations by showing Respect, Integrity, Self-Control, & Effort. High Fives can be given to ALL students in ALL settings by ALL staff. Once received, students put their high fives in a bucket located in the front office and we will do multiple drawings every week to honor those students. Selected students will have to opportunity to choose a prize from a menu of items that include FREE fun food Friday items!! We look forward to celebrating those students that continually meet our RISE expectations!
As many of you know, our school will observe Veterans Day on Friday, November 11th. This year we would like to bring back the Veterans Day assembly and we are certainly excited to do that! We would like to extend an invitation to attend the assembly to any veterans we have in our Heartland community. The assembly will be on Friday the 11th will begin at 9:10 a.m. and will last about an hour. If our students’ parents, grandparents, or any other family members are veterans, we would like to honor them by inviting them and one accompanying guest to sit in our special reserved VIP section for the presentation. You will be recognized by the students, staff and Heartland community for your service to this great country. All you have to do is fill out THIS FORM no later than the end of day Tuesday, November 8th so that we can have an idea how many will be in attendance. On the 11th, you may dress casual/comfortable or wear your colors and arrive at the school by 8:30 a.m. for a small reception to go along with our celebration.
Before I go, this is just a reminder that we do not have school tomorrow (11/7) for Teacher Collaboration Day. We look forward to welcoming back out students on Tuesday November 8th. As always, should you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to our office!
WE ARE...HEARTLAND!
Respectfully,

Dear Parents and Families:
Get Ready! The Scholastic Book Fair has arrived. Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become bolder, prouder, and stronger readers. AND… as always, every book they buy earns rewards for our school.
Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from Friday Nov 4 - Fri Nov 11, from 7:20 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. in the media center:
This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping:

Student IDs Required to Be Worn Each Day
Students are required to wear their student ID each and every day. All students have received their initial ID for the year. Students that do not have their ID are expected to print a temporary sticker badge to wear for the day. This should only be used in emergency situations. Students are allotted 5 free sticker badges per month and will be charge $1 for every badge thereafter until the end of the month. Students wearing a sticker badge will not have access to the snack bar and be last in lunch lunch line. I recommend purchasing a new ID for $5 if your student has lost their ID.
This is one of the district's many safeguards for our schools. IDs provide a quick glance of students that belong to our school, their grade level, and which parts of the building they should be in during the day.

8th Grade - United States Naturalization Test Graduation Requirement
Beginning with the Class of 2025, Oklahoma students must take a 100 question test using the questions from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. The law requires that students get at least 60 of the 100 questions correct in order to graduate. See House Bill 2030 (2021).
The test will be administered on Canvas as multiple choice questions.
Students have the opportunity to retake the test as many times as they want in order to receive a passing score. Once a student has received a 60 or higher, they will not need to take the test again. The transcript will indicate the student has passed the U.S. Naturalization Test.
The test can be given in any language. Please contact your teacher or administrator if you would like to take the test in a different language.
Afternoon Parent Pick-Up
Just a reminder, if you are going to pick up your student at the end of the day you must do so before 2:00pm. Our front office is really busy trying to tie up loose ends, fielding lots of phone calls and ensuring that all messages have been delivered to students. It has been hard to accommodate the parents that want to pick up their child right before the dismissal bell. Starting next week, we will no longer allow parents to check out students if it is after 2:00pm. Thank you for your understanding. Ms. Johnson
