Notes From the Nurse
The State of Illinois mandates that all school age children receive physical, eye (by an optometrist or ophthalmologist) and dental exams prior to the first day of school. All exams must be documented on the State of Illinois forms. All children entering school for the first time or transferring from one school to another are required by law to have these exams. No student may enter school without the proper Health Records on file. Take advantage of the summer months to get the needed exams for your child.
According to law, students may be excluded from school if the physical exam and immunization information are not completed by October 15th of the current school year. Report cards will be withheld if eye exams are not turned in by October 15th. Report cards are also withheld if dental exams are not completed by May 15th of the school year.
We have a number of resources for parents who are having difficulty finding physicians, dentists or optometrists.
I would like to remind parents whose children will be entering 2nd grade, that your child is required to have a new dental exam completed and documented on the State of Illinois form by the first day of school. Those currently in 2nd grade are required to have a new dental exam turned in to the health office no later than May 15, 2018. Report cards will be held if the exam is not turned in by that date.
Please feel free to call me at 815-838-0542 if you have questions or concerns regarding these exams or if you are in need of a form.
Have a safe and joyful summer!

Kindergarten
During the month of May, please keep up with reading the “book-in-a-baggie” as they come home. We can really see some children reading with fluency from nightly practice...way to go!!
Kindergarten SOAR will end on May 11th.
Once summer vacation arrives, it is essential your child continue reading to keep their skills sharp for First Grade. The Lockport Library has a wonderful children’s section and the librarians will show you the appropriate leveled readers for your child. They also offer a wonderful Summer Reading Program as well as many fun activities for children.
You can find the information by clicking on the link below:
The Kindergarten students have become prolific authors and illustrators! We have worked very hard all year on using the “memory words” (both in words that can be sounded out and words that must be know by sight) to compose letters to friends, stories, and journal entries. Please reinforce these skills at home over the Summer. Reinforcement will make sure the skills gained are not lost.
A good way to do this is by keeping a journal of the things they are doing, seeing, feeling or places the students are going. If your child brings it back to share with their Kindergarten Teacher, they will receive a prize.
A printable writing paper is available here:
In Math Kindergarten is working on addition and subtraction facts as well as composing and decomposing numbers, counting to 100 by ones and tens and measurement. Please keep these skills current by playing flashcard games, counting to 100 and working on composing and decomposing numbers to 20.
To reinforce these concepts at home check out these songs:

Barrier Games - “Do You See What I See?”
Barrier games are a great language tool - they provide opportunities to develop communication skills. In a barrier game, two players sit across from each other with a barrier, such as an easel, or a file folder, between them. Each player has duplicate scenes and objects. Place the barrier so that each player is unable to see the other player’s scene and objects. One player-the directing player-chooses where to set each object on his/her scene. The directing player gives verbal directions to help the other player set up her/her scene exactly the same way. The barrier keeps both players from seeing each other’s scene during this process. The directing player must give clear directions such as, “Put the big, yellow block next to the small green triangle.” The game facilitates use of a variety of language concepts such as color, size, location, facial features and order. Once the players feel like their scenes match, let them compare their scenes.
Some examples of resources for Barrier games are Mr. Potato Heads; Melissa & Doug 5 Scene Reusable Sticker Pads (only $3.95 at Blain's Farm & Fleet); Cootie Bug: Magnetic Playsets by Imaginetics; Lego Blocks; shape blocks or magnets; playdough; coloring pages; dry erase boards with matching sets of markers or blank pieces of paper with matching sets of crayons.

This Month’s Topic: Summer Activities to Keep Kids’ Brains Active!
When summer break arrives each year, children are relieved to be finished with another school year. However, it is important to remember not to let the freedom turn into a summer without structure or purpose! Just like during the actual school year, children make better use of their time when they have a routine and activities presented to them. Below you will find a few fun ways you can help keep your children’s brains active!
1. Have students create a summer calendar with important events, holidays, outings, etc. As you can help them identify dates, they can do the writing and decorating for each month!
2. Have your children help in the kitchen! Help them follow along with step-by-step recipes. Perhaps you can even have your children pick out their own recipes or check out a recipe book at the local library.
3. Get crafty! Look up ideas or watch videos on how to make homemade bubble solution, create origami, make playdough or slime, or conduct science experiments.
4. Go on a walk, go to the park, or take an outing to discuss nature. Have conversations about animals, insects, plants, weather, etc. There are several places in the area that are free. Pilcher Park in Joliet, The Little Red Schoolhouse in Willow Springs, or Knoch Knolls Nature Center in Naperville.
5. Read WITH your child! Gather your own favorite selections or have your children find new reads at the local library. Spend time reading and discussing the events, the characters, or what
they would have done if they were in the story. Ask questions!
6. Have your child write, create, and design their own book. Stapling plain pieces of paper together is a great and simple way to get started. They then have to create a title page, think about and write their story, and then provide illustrations for each page.
7. If you are feeling really adventurous, plan a family activity day with your children. Help your child research events and activities in your area and choose an affordable activity the whole family can enjoy. Take plenty of pictures during this adventure. Your can then print them out for an opportunity to create a family scrapbook of your special day.
8. Playing board games is also a great way to keep children’s brains active while spending quality time together. Encourage your child be the banker or scorekeeper to reinforce math skills.

Art
Currently, all kindergarten through third grade students completed their unit on watercolor and painting and concluding ceramic sculpture. All students focused on joinery and basic hand-built techniques for construction. Students also experimented with subtractive elements such as texture to create interesting effects on the surface of the clay. As a final step, students will painted their sculptures in various color schemes.
All students will also be drawing outside as we experience the warm weather. We will be observing nature, and drawing what we see, all around us – like Claude Monet. Students will also learn about artists who use nature as inspiration, like Andy Goldsworthy. We will also discuss some basic sketching techniques.
Thank you to all students, parents, teachers, administration and staff for all your support of the arts throughout the year. It is with your patience and understanding that all our special projects and all good things in art are possible.
