Computing Courses
CPD for the New Programme of Study
Getting to Grips with Logo
This course will provide an introduction to programming with Logo and provide participants with numerous ideas for use in the classroom.
Logo has been with us for many years and has rather slipped under the radar, but it remains a valuable a tool to deliver aspects of the new computing curriculum: E.g
- design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals
- use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables
- use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs
J2Logo, the featured course software, uses the same commands that are found in other Logo programmes, so knowledge gained on the course is easily transferred to other software and apps such as MSW Logo and Move the Turtle.
To view some Logo work created by pupils, click here and for some created by staff on a CPD session, click here. For my blog entry about why I don't think we ought to be ignoring Logo, click here.
Target Audience: KS2 staff teaching computing.
Date: Tuesday 18th November
Time: 1.15-4.15 pm.
Venue: St Nicholas Primary School, Cottingham Road, Hull
Getting to Grips with Visual Programming
This course will give you a solid introduction to programming in a visual environment and provide you with many activities for use with your pupils.
The course will predominantly use the free software J2Code as this software runs on any connected computer or tablet and is free to schools.
However, the techniques and processes are transferable to any visual programming environment such as Scratch, Tynker, the Hopscotch app for iPad and many others.
The outcome of the course will be an interactive game, see example, that participants will design and program and will address the following aspects of the Programme of Study.
- design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts
- use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output
- use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs
If time permits, participants will also create an animated story.
For examples of activities that can be created, click here.
J2Code also comes with Scratch integration.
Target Audience: KS2 staff teaching computing.
Date: Tuesday 25th November
Time: 1.15-4.15pm
Venue: St Nicholas Primary School, Cottingham Road, Hull
