What is PBIS?

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support is a school-wide approach to building a positive school culture and climate. Using the PBIS framework, schools develop a continuum of evidence-based practices for developing and implementing school-wide expectations and acknowledgments. The VLA team is in the process of building the PBIS system for the Virtual Learning Academy. As we continue through this school year, you can expect to be hearing more about the exciting work this team is doing!

Middle School Teacher Spotlight

Mr. Jim McGuire teaches art classes for the VLA students in Kindergarten-8th grade. He has degrees in Art and Art Education from EKU, as well as a Master's in School Counseling. He is currently working on his principal certification at Georgetown College.

"I am very proud to be a part of the VLA. I feel that this endeavor represents the single biggest investment in education by any district in our state. This is a forward-thinking program that will be the first to adapt and provide for an ever-changing educational world. We have the potential to be more responsive, more diverse, further advanced, and best prepared to provide a relevant and meaningful learning experience to a new generation of scholars. No single word better represents our school than POTENTIAL. We have the potential to be amazing, and I believe that together, we will become the footprint that others will follow. It is a humbling opportunity and a great privilege to be part of this seed that will grow into a powerful and sustainable force for education."

Online Behavior Expectations

In the VLA, we Value our Community, Lead by Example, and Actively Engage! When logging in to a zoom call with your teachers and other students, be sure to follow our online behavior guidelines.
