Colts,
Getting a chance to go into classes is always a highlight during the school week. It is rewarding to see our Colts engaged in the lessons that our staff prepare for them. Many of our students were invited to a meeting to participate in the Academic UIL competition later this year which was well attended. We encourage all our students to get plugged in any way possible, and our UIL academic teams are another great way to do so. Please encourage your student to participate if they would like, as we continue to promote the club academic involvement on campus. Our UIL teams cover a wide range of subjects including number sense, spelling, science, speaking and performance events, and more. For more information you can reach out to Kris Lilley, our UIL Academic sponsor, at kristy.lilley@gcisd.net. Learner-centered academics is just another way that we strive to be the BEST at CMS!

8TH GRADE FOUR YEAR PLANNING (ALSO GOOD FUTURE INFO. FOR ALL)
The counselors sent out communication through Skyward on Friday, September 28th about Four Year Planning and Endorsements. If you did not receive this communication, or you have questions, please contact your student's counselor. Last week the 8th Grade English teachers presented a video from the counseling department about 4 year planning (see link below). In the coming weeks, counselors will be meeting with every 8th grade student individually to start a four year plan and choose an endorsement. These individual meetings will go through the end of the 1st semester. Remember, this plan is a working document in Skyward that can be changed this year and in high school. Plus, when the high school counselors come to visit with our students in the 2nd semester, students will revisit their plans and endorsement choices to make any changes. Four year planning and choosing an endorsement is going to be a focus for this school year, and we want our students and parents to feel good about their choices for high school. Please see the links for the video below and for the 9th grade course sheet. All of this information is available through your student's Google 8th Grade Guidance Classroom and more information can be found by clicking on the links below:

Tips from Nurse Martin
Grapevine-Colleyville ISD
School Health Services Nut Free Classroom Letter
Dear Parents:
We have several students at Colleyville Middle School with SEVERE allergies to peanuts and/or tree nuts (almonds, pistachios, walnuts, pecans, cashews, etc). Strict avoidance of peanut/tree nuts is the only way to prevent a life threatening allergic reaction. We are asking your assistance in providing the student with a safe learning environment.
If exposed to peanuts/tree nuts, the student may develop a life-threatening allergic reaction that requires emergency medical treatment. To reduce the risk of exposure, the classroom will be PEANUT/TREE NUT FREE. Please do not send any peanut/tree nut containing products for your child to eat as a snack in the classroom. Any exposure to nut containing products through contact or ingestion can cause a severe reaction. If your child has eaten peanut/tree nuts prior to coming to school, please be sure your child’s hands have been thoroughly washed prior to entering the school.
Since lunch is eaten in the cafeteria, your child will NOT be asked to change his or her eating habits at lunch. Peanut Butter or having nuts for a snack at lunch is acceptable. In the cafeteria there will be a designated peanut/tree nut free area where any classmate without peanut/tree nut product may sit.
This can be a great learning experience for your child. It will teach them everyone has different needs. It is our goal for the school to make every child’s experience here the most positive one possible, but above all it our job to keep our students safe from harm. Please help us to do this by making all classrooms a NUT FREE ZONE.
If you have any questions, please call me at 817-305-4918 or e-mail us at sophia.martin@gcisd.net. Thank you for your help with this very important health issue.
Sincerely,
Nurse Martin
