Healthcare Earns Industry Certification
The Locust Grove High School Healthcare Program was recently recognized with a $10,000 grant from the state after completing a year’s worth of collecting data and showcasing several items in the program. Sandra Martin, the Healthcare Instructor, began this journey two years ago. She attended several training sessions on how to gather and showcase the program’s growth and successes. A team of healthcare professionals were asked to be a part of evaluating the program and assessing the following:
- coverage and delivery of the GADOE Standards in all Healthcare courses,
- teacher certification and experience in the healthcare field and education, including current CPR Instructor certification,
- having an active HOSA chapter that encourages leadership, service, rigor, and success in the community, post-secondary education and employment, and
- adequate lab, equipment and supplies.
With the grant award, an EKG machine, 3 simulated respiratory wall units, dental tools, and an electronic health records system were purchased. The program received excellent reviews from evaluation team members from Emory, St. Joseph, and Piedmont Hospitals, as well as McDonough Primary Pediatrics, Westbury Nursing Home, and the GADOE.
Mrs. Martin will be recognized at the GACTE Summer Conference in July in Atlanta for these efforts. What a noteworthy accomplishment!
Need Some Ideas For Performance Tasks?
This site has some great performance tasks that you can adapt and then use the checkpoints along the ways as formative assessments.
Service Based Learning
Mrs. Siegle's 2nd period held a 5K Color Run/Walk—the first ever at LGHS; the proceeds went towards helping Ill and fostered children in our area. The project itself is being used to learn matrices and probability concepts within the Pre-Calculus curriculum.
Mrs. Brown's Ag Science classes are working with first graders to teach them about their plant growth standards. Click here to see pictures of the students in action!
AP Statistics
Mr. Willis has been attending every optional PD session and putting it to use in his class. His AP Statistics students created poster projects that adhere to the guidelines set forth by the American Statistical Association for its annual poster competition. The students will be using their performance skills to present their ideas to their classmates, and will then evaluate each other using a rubric modified from the ASA rubric. These students are refining their 21st century skills of collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.

Confining Space?
Over Spring Break, I visited a High School in North Atlanta that were inspired by the book The Third Teacher to implement inquiry learning and also about how they used their "confining space" to work for them. I'll be happy to share my pictures from the experience. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3Ax8POM1NmfNUtWVWVNWVV6Nzg
Their website also has some great resources.
