MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
I am so proud of our students for persevering through a long week of required state testing this week as third through fifth graders completed the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) and fifth graders completed the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) as well. We will not receive score reports for these assessments until sometime in the fall, but will be sure to send them home with students when we receive them. Many thanks to all families who attended Family Hoops Night on Tuesday evening! It was great to have this event up and running once again this year and we appreciate all of the volunteers for their planning, time and organization to make it happen. We sure do have many talented students and parents! We have a lot of activity and opportunity coming up at and around Fairview in the weeks ahead! Thank you for taking time to read today’s newsletter below for more information. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Student Council Movie Night: On Thursday, April 13th starting at 6:00 pm, we will be hosting our Fairview Student Council Movie Night! This event is open to students in grades 2-5 and their families. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up soon using this form if you are interested. Once we reach our capacity for the event, the form will be closed. We will be showing the PG-rated film, Turning Red, in the Fairview gym. The cost is free, however, the Student Council will be collecting cereal boxes to donate to the Mt. Prospect food pantry for admission. This collection will be connected to a school-wide collection/event in April that we will share more about in the coming weeks. Concessions will be sold during the duration of the movie and proceeds from these sales will benefit the Student Council. We hope to see you there!
Social Media Parent Presentation at Lincoln Middle School: One of the challenges we face as parents today is knowing how to best help our children navigate the complexities of social media. We encourage parents to attend a parent education event about this topic at Lincoln Middle School on April 13th at 7:00 pm. For more information about this event, click on this link. To register to attend, please fill out this form.
PEPS Open Gym @ Westbrook: On Saturday, March 18 from 10 am - 12 pm, the PEPS (Partnering with Educators and Parents to Support student needs) group is having an open gym at Westbrook! The meeting will give you an opportunity to meet other parents as your child plays. To learn more, please check out the newsletter.
Second Grade Officer Friendly Visits: During the week of March 20th, Officer Friendly will visit with our 2nd grade students to talk about strategies they can use to protect themselves. This is a 45 minute program where children learn how to say “no” to all forms of assault. The program provides age-appropriate strategies for children to use if they are ever confronted. They will watch a short video entitled, “It’s Your Body: You’re in Charge!” as part of the program.
Please contact Jessica Talbot (jtalbot@d57.org) or Cindy Buell (cbuell@d57.org) if you need assistance with language translation of any of the flyers that appear in the newsletter.
FAIRVIEW YEARBOOK
This is your only opportunity to order a yearbook for your student(s). Don't delay as the deadline is March 24th and no late orders will be accepted.
NEWS FROM NURSE BRUNNING
STREP INFECTIONS ON THE RISE
IDPH and the CDC are observing an increase in strep throat -- specifically invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) -- infections among children. Early recognition, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of these diseases in children and adults is very important.
The following steps can prevent the spread of strep throat:
*Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
*Avoid sharing eating utensils with someone who is sick with strep throat
*Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze
*Stay home when you are sick
*See the doctor when experiencing symptoms so you can be tested and treated
Symptoms of Strep
*Sore throat that can start very quickly and can cause severe pain when swallowing
*Fever
*Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus
*Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth
*Swollen lymph nodes in the front of the neck
*Headache, nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain.
