Professional Learning Day

AJS teachers are looking forward to continuing our learning with Mental Health and assisting Junior High students with resetting and regulating so that they can learn. We will also be collaborating, blueprinting, networking with other specialized teachers on Monday, January 30.

In the Spotlight

RESET Room

Ardrossan Junior Senior High will be officially opening the new Reset Room for Grade 7, 8 and 9 students! It is a quiet, safe space in the school (supervised by a teacher throughout most of the day) where students can get assistance working through periods of dysregulation, mental distress or mental health problems so they can return to class. The best part is: Junior High students can use the room (if only for a short 10-minute break)

Our team has been working hard to create a warm and welcoming environment but this is where we need your help! Involving our parent community is an important part of creating sustainable, positive spaces in the school and we would love for our School Council and larger parent community to be included in this exciting pilot. We are in search of some important items for the room and through conversations at School Council, parents have asked for opportunities to engage with the school when there are opportunities to help or to donate to projects and initiatives.

Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

Student Parking

Students are reminded that they are required to register their vehicle and get a parking pass from Mrs. Pietsch when they get their licenses and begin parking in the student parking lot.

Please use the QR code located on the window outside the main office to access the parking pass registration form.

The session will provide information about senior high courses, instruction, programming and extracurricular opportunities throughout the Division, as well as details about diploma requirements and various career path options.

Date: Monday, January 30, 2023
Time: 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Location: The Park Church, 1 Brower Dr., Sherwood Park

Returning Student Registration for 2023-24

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) will once again conduct an online returning student registration process to confirm student registrations for the 2023-24 school year. Families of all current students—with the exception of graduating Grade 12 students—must complete the process to confirm the school their child plans to attend in the 2023-24 school year or advise the Division of their plans not to return to EIPS. Additionally, students who want to attend a non-designated school need to make that request through the returning student registration process—acceptance is based on available space.

The 2023-24 returning student registration takes place Feb. 1-28, 2023.

Access to the Returning Student Registration Form is provided through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you don’t have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, you need to set one up before Feb. 1, 2023. Create a PowerSchool Parent Portal account

For more information, contact the school office at 780-922-2228.

Ardrossan Jr. Sr. High Open House

In addition to the general high school information evening being hosted by EIPS, AJS is hosting an open house at the school. The high school open house provides Grade 9 students and families an opportunity to meet the staff; tour the school; learn about the curriculum, course offerings and alternative programming available; discuss diploma requirements and various career paths; and more.

Date: Monday, February 13, 2023

Time: 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Location: Ardrossan Jr. Sr. High

Black History Month Presentation

The Overture with the Arts will be presenting their 2023 Black History Month Presentation for us again this year. This presentation will be held on February 22 for the whole school.

This years presentation is titled "Tracking Black Canada", which will take participants around the country, while focusing on the often-forgotten histories of early Black communities in Canada. Using OWTA’s trademark edutainment style that combines video, slam poetry, stand-up comedy, and audience participation & interaction, "Tracking Black" Canada will highlight the contributions and achievements made by prominent residents in these forgotten communities, illuminate the conditions that led to their systemic demise, and highlight how their impact is still felt today.

Ardrossan Drama Players

Junior High Drama Club meets on Thursdays at lunchtime. The "Ardrossan Drama Players" will be led by grade 12 students.

Check out the AJS Drama department website for more details and rehearsal schedules. Updates and announcements about the junior high and senior high shows will be found here.

Where to Find the Information You Need

Elk Island Public Schools and Ardrossan Jr. Sr. High use a handful of key systems to share information with students and families. Depending on the information you’re looking for, it’s important to know where to look.

PowerSchool is the primary student information system within the Division. There is an associated app, but the functionality is limited, and families don’t need to download it. From the PowerSchool Parent Portal, you can:

  • Access student grades and report cards;
  • Review student absences;
  • Pay school and transportation fees; and
  • Submit official updates to student or family information.

The PowerSchool Student Portal provides similar access to grades and absence information for students directly.

Brightspace provides more of a day-to-day look what’s happening with your child’s learning communicated directly from your child’s teacher. From Brightspace Parent & Guardian, you can see your child’s:

  • classroom activity feed,
  • grade items and grade feedback from instructors,
  • upcoming assignments,
  • portfolio evidence, and
  • quizzes,

depending on which of the program functions are specifically used by your child’s teacher.

Brightspace for Students is where teachers share updates, calendar reminders and learning materials with students. Compatible with Google, it also allows students to submit assignments, complete quizzes, and see grades and teacher feedback. The Pulse app for students is associated with Brightspace for Students.

SchoolMessenger is the system the Division and schools use to send email and phone communication to families. The contact information in SchoolMessenger is populated from PowerSchool. Through SchoolMessenger, families can:

  • receive general, emergency and attendance messages by phone, email or both; and
  • manage their subscription preferences for these types of messages.

U of A Getaway

U of A Getaway is your chance to explore one of Canada's top 5 universities. Your adventure will include transportation reimbursement, accommodations, meals and a jam-packed schedule of events. Twenty grade 11 students will be selected for this one-of-a-kind weekend away.

Who: Open to grade 11 students throughout Canada

When: May 26-28, 2023

Where: University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta

New AHS Respiratory Assessment Tool

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has launched an enhanced respiratory assessment tool to provide Albertans with guidance to manage a wide range of respiratory illnesses, provide advice on caring for symptoms at home and when to seek additional care. The tool will help guide schools and individuals to the best care options for symptoms, including self-care at home, or seeking care through a walk-in clinic, family physician, or pharmacy for mild to moderate symptoms.
