From Your Proud Principal Mr. Murphy
Dear Thompson Crossing Families,
Thank you for your continued support of our school. Students in grade 3 are busy testing for IREAD this week. For planning purposes, please know 3rd-5th grade students will begin ISTEP+ Part II testing on Monday, April 16. Our students have worked really hard again this year, and we are very encouraged by their excitement and positive frames of mind going into these state assessments. Thank you for your help in encouraging your child to do their best and for getting your child to school on time. Your collaborative efforts are much appreciated. Please try your best to avoid appointments, etc during the school hours from April 16-May 4. Your child’s teacher will email a specific schedule for your classroom, as your child will not test every day in that window.
As always, I look forward to parent input regarding class building for next year. After spring break, a Parent Input form will come home with your child. Please read the directions, and return it by its due date. Again, be looking for this after spring break.
With spring, there comes excitement! With excitement for the warmer weather, there come choices that can be less than positive by students. J Please continue to encourage your child to represent your family, him/herself, and their classroom by making the best choices possible each and every day, right up to the end of the school year. In these days with higher standards and expectations, we need each and every day to focus on the curriculum and everything we can fit into our day.
Please encourage respect for staff, other students, and accepting responsibility for one’s actions. Together, we can make a difference! Have a great spring break! As a reminder, spring break is from March 17-April 1. I hope you have a few weeks of enjoyment and memories that will last a lifetime.
Warmest Regards,
Jeffrey J. Murphy

Each March, Disability Awareness Month is celebrated throughout Indiana. Given that adults and children with disabilities represent slightly more than 19 percent of Indiana’s population, disability awareness is important for all of us.
Led by the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, the goal of Disability Awareness Month is to promote the independence, integration, and inclusion of all people with disabilities. The Council develops a unique theme for this annual event and produces campaign materials that are available free of charge to Hoosiers who want to help make a difference.
So, here at Thompson Crossing, we are using these materials and other resources to bring awareness to our students and community. The students had a poster making/coloring page contest and the winners received prizes themed from the movie, Wonder. We also have books available in our library for students to read and for teachers to share with their class.
The 2018 Disability Awareness month campaign theme is “Be Cool. We Are.” No matter the differences between people, it is always better to treat others the way you want to be treated, and this is especially true when interacting with friends, co-workers, and other Hoosiers who live with disabilities. The theme is all about the importance of being comfortable in your own skin and making the conscious decision to be yourself, because acting different around someone with a disability isn’t cool.
If you come inside Thompson Crossing, you will see the “Be Cool. We Are.” posters, along with our student posters and coloring pages hanging in the main hallways.
If you would like more information, go check out the website.

Reminders
Student Drop-off/Pick-up
For the safety of our students, it is important that all persons picking up or dropping off students use the proper procedures. Students may not be dropped off before 8:40 a.m. With security procedures, the front door will not be unlocked until 8:40 a.m. and students should not be allowed out of an automobile until that time. We also understand that the drop off line gets long in the morning, but please be patient and take the time necessary to make it safe for all our students, parents, and staff. When dropping off students before and after school, please use the main entrance area only. Make sure that you follow the drive through and drop off lanes. Also, make sure that students get out on the curb or left-side of the car. There is no passing in the drop off lane. Your patience is always appreciated!
Appointments/Early Dismissals * New Procedures
On the day of your student's appointment, it is very important that you have your student bring a note to their teacher or the office before school begins for the day. **Prior notification completely eliminates a classroom disruption and helps to assure that your student will be waiting in the office and ready to go when you come to sign them out. We understand that last minute things come up, but we do ask that you keep walk-up requests or last minute phone calls to a minimum. If you are picking up your child for an early dismissal THEY MUST BE PICKED UP BY 3:15 PM ON A NORMAL DISMISSAL DAY AND 2:50PM ON A PLC/WEDNESDAY. Request for early pickups by parents for appointments, etc. will be made through the front office and MUST be in writing also. These new policies will help ensure a safe dismissal for all students. The note should include the students name, teacher name, your name and date. When picking up your child for appointments, please go directly to the Main Office to sign them out. When a student returns from a mid-day appointment, the student should sign back in at the Main Office and turn in his/her doctor's note if they have one.
Absences During the School Year
Students should be fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medication (i.e. Tylenol) for 24 hours before returning to school. If your child has an illness associated with vomiting and/or diarrhea, they should not return to school until 24 hours after the last episode. This helps prevent further spread of viruses and bacteria, and to promote a healthier environment for all. Our goal at Thompson Crossing is to keep kids healthy and in school. It is important for all students to adhere to our illness guidelines in order to reach this goal.
Attendance is extremely important. If your child is not in our classrooms, they cannot learn and be exposed to the same content as their teacher presents. However, everyone becomes ill at various times and we understand! If your child is going to be absent, please call our attendance line at 860-4678 by 9:15 AM. Our data clerk will check the line daily to record absences. Follow the steps below:
- Date of phone call
- Name of parents/ guardians
- Name of student
- Reason for absence
- Number of days for the absence
If you need to leave a personal message for your child’s teacher and/or request homework, please call the teacher’s voice mail number.
