Winter Percussion Starts Season Strong!
The 2019 Scottsburg Winter Percussion got off to a great start to their season last Saturday at New Palestine High School in their first contest of the year. Scottsburg had a great first performance of their show, “Rhythms in Blue” which features famous jazz/blues music by the late American composer George Gershwin. As a result of their strong performance, Scottsburg was announced as the 3rd place finisher in Percussion Scholastic Concert A Class. Upon further review, there was a computer glitch when printing off the recap and Scottsburg actually finished in 2nd place out of 9 groups. This strong finish included finishing higher than last years Silver and Bronze Medalist groups at State Finals in the class.
The group continues their season tomorrow at Franklin Community High School in Franklin, IN. Performance time is 3:06 pm ET.
Congratulations to the students, staff, and directors on a great start to the season and best of luck tomorrow!
Winter Guard Has Great Showing At Henryville!
The Scottsburg Winter Guards continued their season this past Saturday down the road at Henryville HS in TriState Competition. The middle school and Junior Varsity guards made their season debuts with great performances. The Middle School guard finished in first place in their class and the Junior Varsity came in first place in their round and finished a very close 2nd overall for their class. The Varsity continued their great start to the season by capturing 1st place in their round and also finishing in a close 2nd overall for their class.
All three guards will continue their competition season tomorrow at Conner High School in Hebron, KY. Times of performances are spread throughout the morning, afternoon, and evening.
Congratulations on a great weekend to the guards and best of luck in competition tomorrow!

Choir Students Receives Gold Rating!
Scottsburg High School sophomore Avery Kendall left the Indiana State School Music Association Vocal and Piano Solo and Ensemble district competition on a high note. She won a gold rating in Group I and will advance to the state competition on Feb. 16 at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis.
“I’m super excited. I didn’t get a chance to do it last year,” Kendall said.
With her mezzo-soprano voice, Kendall performed an Italian aria, “Sebben, Crudele.” Translated in English, the song’s title is “Thou Is Not Deserving” or “Although Cruel,” and the song examines the topic of unrequited love. The piece is entirely in Italian.
“I picked it for her because it worked for her voice. It has a lot of hard technical stuff,” said Ashley Kruth, Scottsburg High School choir teacher.
To perform the piece, Kendall had to learn how to pronounce the Italian lyrics of the song and research the meaning of the song. Kruth helped Kendall learn the Italian diction and pronunciation as Kruth knows five languages. Kendall also worked on breath support to sing the notes and worked to convey the emotion the author wanted the listener to understand.
“I am really proud of her and everyone,” Kruth said. “I threw really hard stuff at them this year with the expectation of high standards.”
For the last three years, a SHS student has advanced to state for the ISSMA Vocal Solo competition.

Support Pediatric Cancer
This game is being declared a “GOLD” out in support of pediatric cancer awareness and Bree’s Blessings. Gold is the color for Pediatric Cancer.
Coyle Chevrolet will also be donating $10 to Bree’s Blessings for EVERY 3 point shot hit during the Varsity game that EITHER team makes.
This is going to be such a fun night of basketball and awareness.
Bree is from Scottsburg and Jenni, Bree’s mom, attended Southwestern. Since Bree’s Blessings has an incredible amount of supporters from both school districts we thought this would be a great game to be involved with.
Please come out to support Bree’s Blessings and watch two great basketball teams battle for the win.
Help us fill every seat in the gym for this night!
National Assessment of Educational Progress
Dear Parent or Guardian:
Scottsburg High School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on February 19th. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.
Your child may take an assessment in mathematics, reading, or science. In addition to subject area questions, NAEP survey questionnaires are voluntarily completed by students. Your child may also receive an extended questionnaire that takes up to 10 more minutes and asks additional contextual questions. The questionnaires help by providing valuable information about participating students’ educational experiences and opportunities to learn both in and out of the classroom. More information about NAEP survey questionnaires is available at https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/parentsunder the section “What Questions Are on the Test?”
Assessments take about 120 minutes for most students, including transition time and directions.
The information collected is used for statistical purposes only.
- Your child’s grades will not be affected.
- Students may be excused for any reason, are not required to complete the assessment, and may skip any question.
- While the assessment is voluntary, NAEP depends on student participation to help policymakers improve education. However, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify me in writing by February 1st, 2019.
There is no need to study in preparation for NAEP, but please encourage your child to do his or her best. A brochure that explains what participation in NAEP means for you and your child is available at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/pdf/parents/2012469.pdf. Contact Jacob Johanningsmeier at (812) 752-8927 or at jjohanningsmeier@scsd2.k12.in.usif you have any questions.
We are excited that our school is participating in NAEP. We know that Scottsburg High School’s students will show what our nation’s students know and can do.
Sincerely,
Ric Manns
