Upper El Weekly Newsletter
03/07/2022 - 03/11/2022
Dear Parents/families
Dear Upper Elementary parents,
Highlights from the week:
Thank you for meeting us in person, virtually or over the phone for parent teacher conferences. We appreciate you taking the time to discuss your child’s learning with us. If you missed the conference, please contact your child’s teacher to schedule one.
After all of the skiing in January and February, we had a somewhat “normal” schedule at school this week. Fun, hands-on projects this week included creating DNA models and then modeling transcription and translation with them (6th grade), measuring the physical properties of matter (5th), and creating beautiful and intricate zen tangles for creativity time. We also had a community lesson about being an upstander or bystander.
Thank you to all of our parents who volunteer!!!!! We really appreciate you. We have many weekly jobs, daily jobs, and periodic jobs in the classroom, so please let us know if you are interested in coming in. We welcome parents to observe and volunteer in the classroom.
Important information:
6th grade end of year field trip is scheduled for May 18 - 21 in Denver. An informational meeting will be held at school for parents on March 24th at 5pm. Please join us in person or virtually. A link will be sent out shortly before the meeting.
What you need to be doing now:
Making time for the March 24th meeting.
Parents of 4th and 5th graders: please make sure you have read through the information about our end of year field trip to Canyonlands Field Institute on May 4 - 6. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
What you need to be doing now:
Register your child online. Look for an email from Esther or Faith with information. It was sent last week.
Make payments to the office for the field trip or discuss payment options with Denise.
CMAS (Colorado Measures of Academic Success) testing, the State standardized tests, will occur the weeks of March 28th and April 4. Testing for all grade levels (3rd - 6th) will occur in the mornings, Tuesday - Thursday. English Language Arts testing will be the first week; mathematics testing will occur the second week. In addition, 5th graders will take the science tests the week of April 11. It is important that students are present at school, well-rested, and well-fed during these testing times. We will send out a snack sign up soon for parents to provide healthy snacks. If your child must miss school during these dates, please let a teacher know ASAP so we can come up with an alternative plan for your child.
Art Fair will be held on March 25th. This week your child should have finished his / her research on an artist working with a similar medium and should have practiced and experimented with his / her technique. Next week he / she should start creating the art piece for the fair.
We are going on another field trip on Tuesday, March 22. Upper El will be visiting the Ute Museum and the Montrose Rec Center and will return to school for regular afternoon transportation. The cost of the trip is $10. Please fill out the permission form in your child’s folder and return it to school on Monday.
6th grade graduation will be in the morning on Thursday, May 26th. Parents of 6th graders, please save the date.
Shoes: Please make sure your child has indoor shoes, especially since we have mud and snow in the field. This really helps us and our custodian keep the school clean. If you need help purchasing some, please let your lead teacher know.
Have a wonderful weekend! Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Email is the easiest way to communicate with us, and be sure to check out our school website for important information and dates.
