This Just In!
Is conserving food in the United States becoming the norm?
Herbert Hoover quote
On April 25th, 1919 Herbert Hoover wrote: "Of course, the prime objective of the United States in undertaking the fight against famine in Europe is to save the live of starving people. The secondary objective, however, and of hardly less importance, is to defeat Anarchy, which is the handmaiden of Hunger." (13)
Herbert Hoover and the Food Conservation Plan
Herbert Hoover took his job as the head of the United States Food Administration Agency very seriously. He was devoted to his work and helped many Americans and other people across the world from starving to death during the Great War (13).
Wheat, corn, and meat... Oh my!
As of late, what has come to be known as "Hooverizing" is sweeping across the nation! Named after Herbert Hoover, Hooverizing is a different way to say rationing. It may not seem like a huge connection, but you'd be surprised how much Herbert Hoover and his plan has helped the United States to be in the good state of mind they are in (regarding food, of course). Right now, food is a vital key to the Allies' victory of the war. Food is needed over where our soldiers are! Famine is plaguing Europe, and Communism is threatening to rise again unless the people of the United States take action. We must conserve our resources if we wish there to be a victorious outcome of this war for the Allies (13).
Various promotions such as "wheatless Wednesdays" and "meatless Mondays" have been devised and are being recommended that everyone follow them. They are not mandatory but it is encouraged that anyone who is able and willing try to follow their guidelines. It might not seem like it's doing much, but every little sack of wheat or bag of meat we can send across the seas to our soldiers in need counts (14).
The USFA
The United States Food Administration agency, otherwise known as the USFA for short, is in charge of the food rationing in the United States. They were formed in 1971 by President Woodrow Wilson to help deal with the food production and consumption problems in the country. Herbert Hoover was chosen by President Wilson to be the USFA's leader (14). Their main campaign slogans are known as, "Food Will Win the War," and "Food is Ammunition." If civilians can't help on the home front as nurses or soldiers, it is their patriotic duty to support their country in someway. And this way is a very simple solution. Even though food may not seem like that big of a deal, it is a huge help to our troops out fighting on the front line (13).
