Global Visit
On January 16, a team of teachers and administrators from Moore County Schools will visit Pleasant Union to learn more about how we incorporate global education into our instructional program. The team will visit classrooms to observe learning in action. The team will also meet with school staff to learn more about how we prepare future ready learners. At Pleasant Union, we strive to serve as a model for rigorous, engaging learning opportunities in our district and across the state.

Tony Peacock will be joining our Tracks 1 & 3 Fourth Grade students as a writer in residence this week. Mr. Peacock is a writer and a six-time champion of the National Hollerin’ Contest in Spivey’s Corner. He’s shared the sounds of hollerin’ on The Late Show With David Letterman; as the narrator of Hollerin’, a documentary about the National Hollerin’ Contest; and in interviews on radio stations around the world. As a visiting artist in North Carolina classrooms, he uses hollerin’ as a way to break the ice with fourth graders as he works with them to find their own voices as writers. We are excited to have Mr. Peacock Hollerin' here at PUE!

Global Education at Pleasant Union
We are leaping into 2020 with a focus on Health & Well-being. Physical health and mental well-being will be a priority for us.
- After several lessons introducing Health and Well-being, all students at PUE will develop a New Year's Resolution centered around Health and Well-being.
- Our teachers will display these resolutions creatively in the hallways.
- There will also be an opportunity to have students create cards for children in the hospital. Health and well-being is more than just physical. Supporting each other and reaching out in kindness does a lot for our mental well-being!
Your child will also participate in Brain Breaks (physical activities) with a purpose through UNICEF Kid Power. “UNICEF Kid Power features free, interactive videos that give students the power to save lives globally and give back locally!”
- Please see the flyer below for additional information.
Please see the annual asbestos notification below from Stephen McLoughlin, Director, Environmental & Grounds Department:
In the fall of 1989, in compliance with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos Hazards Emergency Response Act (AHERA), the school system had inspections conducted in each of our school buildings for the purpose of identifying asbestos-containing building materials. The inspection findings and resulting asbestos Management Plans have been on file in each school administrative office since that time. Management Plans for all schools are also available in the Environmental and Grounds Department office.
The EPA requires us to perform periodic surveillances of the asbestos materials every 6 (six) months. No significant changes in the asbestos material were noted during the 2018-19 school year.
Every 3 (three) years, the EPA requires the school system to have the asbestos materials re-inspected by an accredited Asbestos Inspector or Management Planner. The Management Planner then reviews the results of the re-inspection and recommends actions that should be taken to safely manage each of the identified asbestos materials in school buildings.
The latest re-inspection was conducted in the Summer of 2019. The asbestos materials that were found to be in satisfactory condition will be managed in place as recommended by the accredited Management Planner. Interior materials that were recommended for removal were removed over winter break. Exterior materials recommended for removal will be removed over Spring break. The next accredited re-inspection will occur in the Summer of 2022.
The results of all periodic surveillances and three-year re-inspections are on file in the Environmental and Grounds Department administrative office located on Rock Quarry Rd. You may view these documents during normal business hours by appointment (Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM). You may contact the Customer Service Hotline (919) 856-8120 to reach the Asbestos AHERA Designee, Stephen McLoughlin, for more detailed information about the program or questions regarding a specific building
