How do I select a Bible?
So you want a new Bible? There are lots of great choices! A translation is usually worked on by a committee of biblical scholars. These people have devoted their lives to translating the Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament) into an understandable and faithful language.
Some options are the New Revised Standard Version, Common English Bible, Revised English Bible, New International Version, New King James Version, and the Jerusalem Bible. A paraphrase takes a more colorful approach to try to get the flavor of each story without necessarily rendering each word individually. An example is “The Message” by Eugene Peterson.
You might like a Bible with some added info or study aids. Look for introductions to each book and maybe study notes down the side or at the bottom of the page. These study aids (including section headings), while usually well-researched, are the considered opinions of the editors and are not technically part of the Scripture. For digging into the Word, try New Oxford Annotated Bible or HarperCollins Study Bible.
Look around at www.cokesbury.com and biblegateway.net.

At home I have a shelf full of different translations of the Bible. I frequently refer to multiple versions, especially when I struggle with what a particular passage or book is saying to me. While I don’t have a favored translation, I would say that I use the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) most often. I have used this translation multiple times in teaching Disciple Bible Study and other classes so I have become most familiar with its language.

It is much easier for me to read and understand. The footnotes are very detailed and give you a deeper understanding of the background and meaning of each verse.
