This Week's Deadlines and Events
TODAY is the Deadline for the 4-H Shirt Submission
Douglas-Sarpy 4-H youth are invited to create the design for this year's 4-H t-shirt. Submissions need to be hand drawn or painted and turned into Brett by May 12, 2023. They can be emailed to brett.kreifels@unl.edu or sent to the office (Nebraska Extension Douglas-Sarpy Attn: Brett, 8015 W Center Rd. Omaha NE 68124).
Voting for the winners will be done with a google form, watch the newsletter for link.

Order your Market Broiler Chicks by May 22
Sarpy County Fair Market Broiler Project
- The Sarpy County Fair Broiler Classes will consist of a Pen of 3 Market Broilers.
- A Pen of 3 Broilers will consist of 3 Male or 3 Females
- All 4-Hers must sign up for the Broiler Project and receive their chicks at the same time.
- Broilers may be picked up on the week of June 12th (Exact Date is TBD) from 10am-5 pm from the Douglas-Sarpy Extension Office at 8015 W Center Rd. Omaha
- Only those youth who have signed up for the broiler project and receive their broilers through the program are eligible to compete.
- Families may share an order of chicks but the same family members may not show the same birds.
- Broilers will be judged on marketability, degree of muscling and uniformity.
- A Champion and Reserve Pen of 3 Broilers will be awarded
- Champion and Reserve Pens and Purple Ribboned Pens are eligible for the Sarpy County Fair Premium Auction on Saturday, August 5th

Volunteer of the Week - Cindy Menzel
Are you looking to help with a 4-H event? We are looking for a few volunteers!
- 2 volunteers for the Table Toppers contest, June 29th (to help kids bring in their tables, watch the doors to the meeting rooms, provide activities for the families while waiting and assist the judges as needed. Also to help prepare the ribbons for the awards ceremony).
- 2 volunteers for the Fashion Show judging day, July 13, (mainly to help read the narratives and call in contestants when it is their turn).
- 1 volunteer for the clothing area to help attach ribbons and prepare items for display on entry day, August 1st , at the fairgrounds.
- Also, we need a Clothing Area Superintendent to help keep things on track in the clothing area on August 1st, entry day.

Livestock Project of the Week - Show at the Fremont 4-H Expo!
The Fremont 4-H Expo is open to 4-H Exhibitors from Burt, Butler, Colfax, Cuming, Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy, Saunders and Washington Counties. This year's Expo will be July 12-15, 2023.

Project of the Week - Go Camping
Camping season is almost upon us but there is still time for youth to sign up for a camp with Nebraska State 4-H Camp.

Experience Nebraska via horseback, hiking, and with a trip down the Super Slide! Then see the prehistoric Agate Fossil Beds for a week of exploring Nebraska’s wilderness; both past and present.

Challenge yourself with high ropes, zipline, and a rock wall! Work together with your new friends for a canoeing adventure, and round out your day with gaga and 9 square in the air!
Burwell, July 16-20
Explore the flora and fauna with a week on the river front! Explore the North Loup River, go geocaching, tracking, and don’t forget about playing an epic game of capture the flag!

Upcoming Events and Deadlines
Participate in the Quilts of Valor Program
The Douglas-Sarpy 4-H program would like to encourage our youth to participate in the Quilts of Valor program.
A Quilt of Valor® (QOV) is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war. The Quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”
4-H members and volunteers can work alone or in groups to make the quilts. Perhaps you can find someone who will help donate fabric, batting or machine-quilting to complete your project. You may want to contact a service organization or other donors in your community to help provide funds for the Quilt of Valor. Learn more about the program at

During this workshop, youth will have the chance to create different projects: wall hanging, magazine bookmarks, junk journal, cork art, and a gnome friend. Join our Poultry Judging Team
The Poultry Judging Contest will be at PASE in June. The Douglas-Sarpy 4-H program is looking for participants for an intermediate (10-14 Year olds) and Senior Team (15-18 year olds). The team will compete at the PASE Contest and judge production poultry, eggs, ready-to-cook poultry and broiler carcasses.

New Member Zoom Meeting - May 23, 2023, 6-7 PM
Want to know more about 4-H? Youth and parents are invited to attend this Zoom meeting to learn about Douglas-Sarpy 4-H and the ways you can get involved. Computer Coding Workshop - June 23
This engaging workshop will pique youth’s interest in computer science by exploring codes and programs using Ozobots! The Ozobot is a miniature robot with color sensors that allow it to follow lines and read color codes to complete commands. In this workshop, youth will learn what makes a robot a robot, use color coding to tell a story, and explore Ozoblockly – an online coding program to create sequential block coding. This workshop is ideal for youth K-5th grade.

YQCA Training Dates
Nebraska 4-H requires all youth enrolled in livestock projects to complete annual quality assurance certification through Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA). YQCA is a national multi-species quality assurance program focused on three core pillars: food safety, animal well-being, and character development.

Participants need to sign up for the in-person training and there will be a pre and post test given to them that day. They will need to pay the $3 online before they come to the training. Their training will be complete when they have paid, attended the training and done the pre and post test.
Participants can take the course online ( https://yqcaprogram.org/) for $12. Click on the word "Home" on the left of the green bar to get to the courses. Then scroll down to find your age appropriate course. After completing the online course, you will need to send a copy of your completion certificate to Brett (brett.kreifels@unl.edu) You will access your certificate from the drop-down menu on your username by clicking "Course Certificates."
