Dear Parent or Guardian of Students at JHE:
Joseph Henry Elementary School provides support services to K-6 students who are at risk of not meeting the Common Core Learning Standards as identified by state and local assessments. This support may be provided indirectly in the form of consultation with classroom teachers, as in-class support, or through direct services to students. Levels of support depend on each student’s need.
We are very fortunate to be able to provide all students in grades K-6 the amount of support they need to be successful. Our programs are as follows:
- Grades K-2 encore time is approximately 30 minutes of targeted skill instruction in reading as well as math each day.
- In grades 3-6 staff will work with students during learning lab or other designated times chosen by the grade level teachers for approximately 30 minutes 2-5 times per week.
Our support will supplement the regular reading and mathematics instruction it will not replace the regular class instruction. Every four to six weeks we will assess and regroup students based on their area of skill deficit. Instruction may come from your child’s classroom teacher, another grade level teacher, a reading or mathematics specialist, a special education teacher or other staff member.
Encore time/learning lab is also a great opportunity for students that do not require additional support as it allows staff time to extend learning and challenge students by working on enriching activities. Helping every student meet or exceed the Common Core Learning Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics in Grades K-6 is one of our goals. To assist us with this, we will be assessing students three times per year using STAR. STAR is computer adaptive assessment, approved by New York State, to identify student’s strengths and weaknesses. Parents are now able to view not only their child’s NYS assessment report but will also be able to view the STAR parent report on School Tool. If you do not have a log in for School Tool please email firstname.lastname@example.org to get set-up. Under your child’s picture you will see a logo to click on to view parent reports.
In addition, we are very pleased to once again be able to offer academic support lab and homework help during our second dismissal. This period (2:30-3:30) will have two distinct purposes:
- Required reading or mathematics support for students not meeting benchmarks
- Homework help program for students who demonstrate an inability to complete homework which negatively impacts their success
Both programs are by invitation only. Reading and math support is required. If your child is required to stay for either homework help or reading/mathematics support you will receive a letter indicating such. Should your child be required to participate in either program, please be assured we will provide them with a bus ride home. As always, if you prefer to pick- up your child please arrive by 3:30. Children will be dismissed from the cafeteria.
Your child’s progress toward meeting the Common Core Learning Standards will be assessed at various grade levels during your child’s elementary years. Ongoing evaluation will help determine the specific level of interventions and the need to continue or modify these services each year. Providing additional support/enrichment each day will increase the likelihood that your child will be successful in meeting the Common Core Learning Standards and reach his or her full potential.
