Mill Creek Magic Messages
News and Updates from Mr. Ortman and Mr. Murtha 3/17/2023
March Madness Invades Mill Creek!
Are you ready for March Madness? Mill Creek sure is ready! This year, we are bringing the excitement to our school with a school-wide classroom versus classroom bracket competition!
This past Monday, we held a school-wide NCAA livestream bracket lottery for both the men's and women's NCAA Basketball Tournament teams. Each classroom had a "draft order," and when their time came, a Bingo ball determined their teams. Some classrooms are representing #1 seeds, while others are hoping for a "Cinderella Story!"
Now, we a have few weeks to engage in some healthy and fun classroom versus classroom competition. And... unless one classroom gets really lucky, we will likely have 2 winners at the end - one for the men's bracket, and one for the women's bracket. Let the rivalries begin, and let's see who has bragging rights in the end!
Special thanks to 4th Grade teacher, Mr. Courtney, for organizing our Mill Creek March Madness and for adding to our school spirit this fun and exciting time of year!

FROM MR. ORTMAN and MR. MURTHA
It's that time of the year again - March Madness! As the NCAA basketball tournament kicks off, many of us will be following along and cheering for our favorite teams. While March Madness is certainly a fun and exciting time, it's also an opportunity to learn important lessons both on and off the court.
On the court, we can learn the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. The athletes who compete in the tournament have worked hard to get there, and they understand the value of working together as a team, pushing through adversity, and respecting their opponents.
Off the court, we can learn the importance of time management and balance. As we follow the tournament, it's important to remember to prioritize our schoolwork and other responsibilities. We can also use this time to reflect on the balance we have in our own lives, and to make sure we are making time for the things that truly matter to us.
Finally, March Madness is an opportunity to come together as a community and have fun, and we are doing just that at Mill Creek! Ask your child about Mill Creek March Madness! In celebration of March Madness, each classroom is representing a men's and women's NCAA Tournament team in a healthy and fun competition between classrooms and as a means of generating school spirit.
Whether you are watching the games with friends, participating in a bracket challenge, or simply enjoying the excitement of the tournament, remember to have fun and enjoy the moment!
As we celebrate March Madness, let's remember the important lessons we can learn both on and off the court. Go Team Mill Creek!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE about Personal Electronic Devices...
Teachers have noticed an increase in the amount of electronic devices, especially smart watches, being brought to school by students. In some cases, student personal electronic devices are becoming obtrusive to instruction, especially if alerts are set to go off throughout the school day. Considering this, we would ask the following:
- Please consider having your child keep their personal electronic devices at home.
- If you feel your child must bring their personal electronic device to school, please have them put it on a setting that blocks alerts during the school day. For instance, the newer versions of Apple Smart Watches have a Schooltime feature that allows parents to limit the watch’s functionality during the school day (some older versions, however, do not have this feature).
- Another option is to have your child keep their personal electronic device silenced and in a secure part of their bookbag during the school day.
Additionally, we cannot ensure that a student’s personal electronic device will not go lost or missing when it is brought to school.
Thank you for your understanding regarding and attention to this matter.

Instructional Spotlight - Ms. Sherman, 6th Grade Pre-Algebra
This past Monday, Ms. Sherman's 6th Grade Pre-Algebra students transformed their classroom into and participated in a Probability Carnival. Her students had a blast exploring various probability concepts and engaging in fun activities.
The Carnival involved probability games that were created by the students. They featured ball toss, a Memory-style activity, rolling of dice, and more! Prior to playing, student groups made predictions about the results of their probability activities. Some groups' outcomes were close to what was predicted, while others had surprising outcomes. At the conclusion, the student groups analyzed their results, part of which involved theorizing why their predictions were either "on point" or surprising.
All in all, it was a fun and interactive way for students to apply their math skills and learn about probability! Many thanks to Ms. Sherman for organizing such a fun and educational event!
