Anger Management:
Hi, Stellar Families! This is Maureen Sanders, Stellar’s Homeschool Liaison. As a parent to three teenage children, I am no stranger to anger and frustration. There have been many times that my children have pushed my buttons and I need to take a “mommy time out.” I was reading the “North State Parent Magazine's ”March 2021 issue and there was a really good article titled “Anger Management: Helping Kids Cool Down”. Even though I was familiar with some of the techniques, they were all good reminders of ways that kids and parents can successfully deal with the issues of anger. I wanted to share the ways that parents can model anger management for their children. If you are interested in reading about age appropriate anger management techniques for your children, follow this link to the “North State Parent Magazine”
Good things to remember when you are starting to feel frustrated and angry:
Walk away
Take some deep breaths
Keep a calm voice
Use calm body language (relaxed limbs, hands, and jaw)
Diffuse anger by doing a calming activity (tidy up, take a walk, splash water on your face)
Fake it until you make it
Make a commitment in advance to keep your cool
Think about how your actions affect your kids
Acknowledge that it is normal for your kids to push your buttons
Try to see the humor in the situation (My personal favorite)
