Mar Vista Parent Newsletter
Week of May 3, 2021
Dear Families,
Happy May! Students are having fun learning and doing more hands-on activities at school! Last week, the Student Store opened and students were able to turn in their Mar STAR Bucks for items of their choice. If your student is learning from home only, please let us know at distribution if they've earned "virtual" bucks to trade in for hard-earned goodies! All students are able to earn bucks for meeting and exceeding PBIS school expectations. We want to thank them for creating a positive and safe school culture. All of our students are Mar STARs! (Safe, Team Players, Accountable, and Respectful)
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week! Please show your teacher(s) how much you appreciate them by telling them or showing them in some creative way. Teachers do so much in front of and behind the scenes to support students and families and they deserve some recognition for their hard work! Thank you for keeping their contributions in mind during this very special week!!
We're in the final stretch of the school year and several of fun, community-building events are coming up! We're looking forward to seeing your families participating in the following:
1) Pages and PJs this Thursday, May 6 from 6-7 pm.
2) The Talent Show is set for May 28. Student submissions are due now.
3) Open House is scheduled for Thursday, May 20 from 6-7 pm. This is a virtual event and links will be available the week of the event.
Also, remember that Kinder registrations are still open, so if you know of neighborhood families or have a young one who turns 5 on or before September 1, please have them register asap!
Thank you,
Stephanie Monroe, Principal
READ-A-THON - Thanks for your support!!
Remember - All participants receive a free book from Mrs. J!
The winners will be announced at the virtual Pages and PJs next Thursday and prizes will be distributed the following week at materials pick up or at school for those attending in person.

Mr. J's Academic Coordinator Update
Hi, Families.
Thanks for your help with doing the health symptoms pre-screening before bringing your children to school for in-person learning. This form can be found on the Mar Vista website. This makes the arrival process much quicker for everyone!
Just a reminder that the annual state assessment, referred to as the SBAC, will not need to be administered this year. This will allow teachers more time to focus on teaching the standards. We will continue using our MAP assessment data to monitor progress and to support student needs. The third administration of this assessment for the year will take place this week and into the following two weeks. Please be aware that there may be more asynchronous work for the students during this time when they are not in the group testing.
Thank you to everyone that has sent in pictures for the spirit days! This is one way we are trying to maintain connection and community, so it is appreciated. This week is art week!. Take a picture of you creating art or a picture of you and your artwork and send it a picture to be featured on the Mar Vista News.
Students will be continuing Unit 7 in our language arts curriculum, Benchmark, this week.

They purchased Zearn for us and I have to say it has been a HUGE support for my math program. I also appreciate the $400 classroom funds because I have been purchasing chapter book sets for my class. I also really appreciate Ashley continuing on being treasurer with her full time job. -Miss Risa
