Corbett Grade School
October 2023
Dear Families,
We have a lot happening in the grade school this month with field trips, fire safety, and our annual Corbett PTA Jog-a-Thon. In addition, teachers and their students are working on building their classroom communities and students are learning how to support each other both inside and outside of their classroom. We are still working on expected behaviors in the cafeteria and on the playground. The month of October we will be continuing the conversations of safety and kindness with each other with the support of our classroom teachers, our student services staff, and our counselors.
Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Corbett Grade School Conferences
School conferences area a great opportunity for families to connect with your child's teacher and talk about school progress. Conferences help parents and guardians be more informed about students' strengths, needs, behaviors, and learning styles.
If your are unable to meet during this week, please let the classroom teacher know another day that would work. Mr. Church, Ms. Y., Miss Anna, and Ms. Bell-Watkins will be available for conferences as well. Just email them to schedule a time or drop in on either Tuesday (10/10) or Wednesday (10/11).
Email me with any questions or concerns at mdawkins@corbett.k12.or.us.

MAP Growth Assessment
This school, year students in grades 2-6 in Corbett Grade School will be participating in MAP growth assessment as part of a comprehensive and balanced assessment plan. The information gained from these assessments (three over the school year) will help our teachers provide instruction to challenge every student, whether they are below, at, or above grade level. MAP Growth student reports also present realistic learning goals by subject areas so that, through a teacher’s guidance, students can individually see their progress and be inspired to take charge of their own learning.
Assessments will be in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and math. Our classroom teachers will participate in a two hour professional development meeting on October 19 and then assessments will be given in early November. We are excited for another tool to help us provide the best instruction for our students. More to follow!
Educational Excellence
On Friday, September 29 our K-12 teachers partnered with Educational Excellence to prioritize Oregon Department of Education Standards for grades K-12. Together, we discussed the procedure and then broke into four different content area groups (ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science) to look at all of the standards. Teachers picked what they believed to be the most important standards, then worked with a grade level partner to look at their choices, and then they worked as a K-12 team to select specific priority standards. These priority standards tmst be taught deeply to help student achievement. It was a long and productive day that we will share details in our November newsletter.
Fire Safety
Each year, our Corbett Volunteer Fire Department presents a lesson on fire safety to each of our classrooms. They bring us important information about safety in our homes and at school. Corbett Grade School will be welcoming Corbett Volunteer Fire Department on Monday, October 9 and Wednesday, October 11. If you would like to show your appreciation to our volunteers from Corbett Fire Department, please let Michelle (mdawkins@corbett.k12.or.us) know. They LOVE snacks and treats throughout the day!
