Identity Theft
Ways to Protect and Prevent
What is Identity Theft?
Occurs when someone wrongfully acquires and uses a consumer's personal identification, credit, or account information.
Ways To Protect Yourself
Social Security Number
Only give it out to trusted organizations and only when absolutely necessary
Safeguard your wallet!
Carry only what you need when you go out, and do not carry:
Social Security card, birth certificates, or passport.
Internet Safety
Only give out personal information when making a purchase. Alongside only using credit cards when making purchases online
What Credit Report Shows
It reveals how prompt you are in paying back loans, how much money you could borrow should you decide to go on a spending bender, and how many times you've applied for credit. What it does not reveal is your salary, business debts (unless you personally guaranteed a loan), and whether or not you're a generous tipper.
How To Raise Or Keep A High Credit Score
- Pay your bills on time.
- Keep balances low on credit cards and other "revolving credit."
- Apply for and open new credit accounts only as needed.
- Pay off debt rather than moving it around.
