Heronshaw School Newsletter

Summer 1- April

Communication Mrs Saunders-Short - Headteacher

We can't believe that we are already entering into the Summer term, this year seems to be going so quickly. Last term saw the highlights of the Foundation Easter production and the home baking competition. Both were a huge success and the children and staff loved them. We all ended the term on a high note. Well done Tongwell for winning the spring term Heronshaw Houses competition with an amazing 649 points! The spring totals and autumn totals will be added together in July to see who wins the Heronshaw House Cup for the first time. Tongwell team will be enjoying their reward afternoon in the next few weeks.

Going forward this term, we have parents evenings coming up. You will have already recieved the spring term progress report which we hope has provided you with some useful information on how your child is doing. We do hope that parents find the parent evening appointment helpful and gives you a chance to discuss not only your child's progress and success so far, but also the next steps for them and how you can support at home.

This term we will have our summer trips, they are currently being arranged so look out for those letters in due course.

The focus for this term will be the end of year expectations for the children, and staff are working hard with the children to achieve the expected standard and beyond. The Year 1 Phonics screening check will take place in the week commencing 11th June, where every year 1 child and those of year 2 who need to retake, will work with their teacher 1-1 to read the 40 words set by the DFE. Children are being supported and prepared for this test and we are keeping it as low key as possible. You will find out the results of the test in the end of year school report. If you want any more information regarding the test please speak to the class teacher.

The year 2 children will be sitting the SATS test in May in Reading, SPAG, and 2 Maths papers. Yet again the teachers are working hard to prepare the children for the tests and the expectations of them. We aim to keep this time as stress free as we can. Please feel free to talk with the teachers if you have any further questions.

We hope we have another successful term, and I look forward to working with you all.

Regards
Mrs Saunders-Short

Attendance

In accordance with our attendance policy we will be monitoring attendance and lateness this half term and the Governors and Headteacher are currently carrying out meetings for persistent lateness/absences . Anyone who falls below the expected standard of 96%, will receive communication from the school. Those of you who are struggling with attendance and wish to discuss it with us prior to receiving a letter or appointment please make contact with Penny Meehan (School Parent Liason Co-ordinator). She can be found on the main playground Tuesday- Thursday ams, or through contacting the office.

Attendance is very important to us. So that we ensure we provide all children with the best start we ask that parents take children’s schooling seriously and not to book holidays during term time, or take any time off that would be unauthorised (see attendance policy for clarification). Any unauthorised holiday that meets 5 days, either in succession or in accumulation, will result in a fine.

Clubs

When you receive confirmation that your child has a place in a club, please pay promptly, as advertised. Any outstanding club payments will mean that the place is removed and this will risk you being offered a place on subsequent clubs. We are finding that we have to chase people a lot to pay for clubs they have requested, please ensure you only pick clubs you are willing to pay for.
We like to offer a wide variety of clubs and try to keep the prices broad so there is something for everyone, but to ensure the school does not have to pick up the cost of unpaid clubs, we will have to cancel any clubs that don't meet the full quota.
