Preparing for college checklist
August
- Look into your top college choices online or go on campus visits. Request admission information.
- Retake the ACT/SAT to improve your score
- Begin researching scholarship options
September
- Ask your counselor about creating a resume, recommendation letters, & applying for scholarships
- Be aware of college application due dates and financial aid deadlines
- Attend college fairs & financial aid events in your area
October
- Sign up for an FSA ID at fsaid.ed.gov
- Attend a FAFSA application event
- Finalize your admissions essays
November
- Go on college visits & meet with a financial aid officer to help narrow down your college choice
- After filing the FAFSA, watch for your Student Aid Report & check for accuracy
December
- Compare college costs & programs
- Research and apply for college, local, and private scholarships
- Consider job shadowing for a better look at your desired career field
January
- Complete the FAFSA by Feb. 1st to meet the new priority deadline
- Submit any verification forms to the financial aid office, if requested
- Continue to apply for scholarships
February
- Review your financial aid award letters
- Contact the financial aid offices with any questions
- Begin to narrow down your college choice
March
- Develop a financial plan to pay for college
- Watch for housing & other college deadlines
April
- Watch for acceptance letters, financial aid awards, etc.
- Review and return any missing forms to the college of your choice
- Let any college you are not attending know of your choice. This is best practice, especially if you have been offered a scholarship, so they can extend offers to the next student in line.
May
- Graduate!!!
- Finalize summer job plans and save a portion of your earnings
June
- Plan for college orientation, transportation & housing
- Prepare a realistic budget you can follow throughout college
- Follow up with the financial aid office at your college to ensure all paperwork is complete
July
- Finalize move-in dates & housing for the fall semester
- Be sure you are enrolled in the required # of credit hours for scholarships & other financial aid awards
- Relax, and enjoy your freshman year!!
