Rising Ninth Graders: this is for you!

High School course request selection is just around the corner. We have been working with our feeder high schools to setup times for high school counselors to come and meet with our students, virtually, to complete their course selections for their BASE, ZONED high school. Students that have applied for a specialty program will schedule with their ZONED school. Specialty program scheduling information will be shared at a later date. We will be providing more detailed information as we get closer to our LRMS Canvas Counseling page so be sure to check out our page. For now, please save the following dates:

  • Students ZONED for Garfield High School: February 8, 2021
  • Students ZONED for Woodbridge High School: February 16- February 19, 2021
  • Students ZONED for Hylton High School: TBD
  • Students ZONED for Colgan High School: TBD

Additionally, we will be offering Breakfast with the Counselor: High School Editions! Breakfast with the Counselors will have a special focus on February 1st and February 8th. Rising 9th Grade students are encouraged to attend if they would like to talk with our counselors about high school course requirements and scheduling prior to meeting with a high school counselor. Students may also reach out to their counselor individually through email.

Academic and Career Plans

All current 7th and 8th grade students at LRMS should have created, updated, and reviewed their Academic Career Plan in their Career Investigations class. The Virginia Department of Education requires the creation of an Academic Career Plan during 7th grade. This plan will be reviewed with students several times through their secondary education career and aids in post-secondary planning. More information about Academic and Career Plans is available on the LRMS Counseling Canvas page.

New Semester, New Classes!

Second Semester Encore courses begin the week of January 26th. Students should check their new class in StudentVue. Due to the nature of scheduling this year, schedule change requests will not be permitted unless a student is missing a class, or a schedule error exists.

National School Counseling Week

National School Counseling Week: "School Counselors: All in for All Students" will be celebrated February 1- February 5, 2021 to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors. The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who “implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.

“School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, postsecondary options and social/emotional skills,” said Jill Cook, ASCA executive director. “School counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success.”

Virginia Kindness Week

The Virginia Department of Education is recognizing the week of February 14th through February 20th, 2021 as Virginia Kindness Week. Stay tuned for more information about we will spread kindness during this inaugural event.
