Password won't work from last year
My password from last year won't work anymore. What can I do?
First, you need to know what type of account you have – K-12 or non-K-12.
K-12 USERS
These users should be able to use their @k12.sd.us email address as the username and the same password that is used to access emails.
Website: https://doestars.sd.gov
User ID: Email Address (ending in k12.sd.us)
Password: Use the same password as the one which was set up by the K-12 Data Center.
Usually when K-12 users have problems, it is not related to SD-STARS. Rather it is related to either their browser or questions about their password.
Many times, browsers try to cache (or remember) information during the log-in process. Sometimes the browser cache is out of date or wrong. In these cases, you can clear the cache and/or history from your browser or try logging in using a different browser.
If the issue isn’t with the browser, then you may need to request assistance with your K-12 password. First, contact your district's technology coordinator. To find your district's technology coordinator, please visit http://doe.sd.gov/ofm/edudir.aspx. If you can't find the help you need through your technology coordinator, you may ask the K-12 Data Center to reset your password by emailing Help@k12.sd.us.
Tip: You can test your password directly through the K-12 Data Center's Webmail and Members sign-in options. To do this, visit www.k12.sd.us.
NON-K-12 USERS (AKA: FORM-BASED USERS)
If you log into SD-STARS with an email that doesn’t end with @k12.sd.us, then you are a “non-K-12 user.” We also refer to these users as “form-based users.” These users are required to change their password every year. If the last time you logged into SD-STARS was before August 2021, then you will need to set up a new password.
For non-K-12 users, password assistance is available form the log-in screen.
STEP #1: Click on the Manage Passwords link.
From there, the screen walks you through how to reset your password.
STEP #2: Enter your non-K-12 email address.
STEP #4: You should now be able to set up a new password. Remember that the password must contain at least eight but no more than 15 characters. The password must have one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number, and one special case character.
Once the password is reset, then you can log into SD-STARS with your non-K-12 email and your new password.
For those who forgot their old password AND must set up a new password, it may be necessary to complete this process twice.
If you have any problems with this process, please contact STARSHelp@state.sd.us.
