COUGAR COURIER
December 14th, 2018
From the desk of Principal Ruiz
This is the week...the time has arrived! Join the CIA staff at Barnes and Noble in University Park Mall on Sunday from 11:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M. Your store purchases will help the CIA media center and your gifts can be wrapped by your CIA staff. We look forward to seeing you then!
Is your scholar looking for an opportunity to be out of uniform? If so, grab their favorite, or ugliest, holiday sweater and $1.00...any scholar that pays $1.00 may participate in the holiday sweater contest that will be held on Thursday, December 20th. School uniform pants must be worn in conjunction with the holiday attire.
Our PTSO (they have a new name!) met this week on Thursday. Be sure to read the information in this week's newsletter.
Be sure to join the CIA scholars this Tuesday evening for the Winter concert. The concert will be held at 5:30 in the main gymnasium. If one cannot attend the evening performance, please consider joining our team for the performance at 2:15 that day. All parents attending the concert during the day must sign in at Door #1.
Are you looking for last minute stocking stuffers? Well, look no further...the CIA ROAR store has everything your scholar may need and want to fill those stockings! Come and shop our ROAR store!
Through Coca-Cola Give, your family can support CIA with purchases you already make! By donating your codes from your Coca-Cola products, our school will be able to use donated funds for extra treats and surprises. Simply click here to sign up, select our school, and either scan or enter your codes. In advance, thank you for supporting CIA with your Coca-Cola purchases!
This week, retired Ambassador David Robinson, visited our kindergarten classroom to speak to our scholars about passports. Our scholars are learning about different countries and various winter holidays. Margot's family knew Ambassador Robinson from Notre Dame and extended an invitation for him to come and share with our scholars his knowledge of travel and passports. Our kindergarten scholars learned so much about the different kinds of passports and why one would need a passport to travel to other countries, as well as how to identify a fake one. Thank you, Ambassador Robinson for sharing your knowledge with our CIA scholars!
Our PYP scholars used math, critical thinking and physical education to create "snow people" during their gym classes. We are blessed with educators that are committed to making learning engaging and rewarding.
Are you interested in raising funds designed to support our Family Resource Center? Are y'all hungry? We are too, and we are working to fill our tummies and our spirits! The Salvation Army has partnered with Five Guys in Mishawaka, Panera Bread in Mishawaka, Portillos, and Blaze Pizza in the Eddy Street Commons for donation drives. Each organization is committed to donating a percentage of meals purchased to support families in need during the holiday season. If your family enjoys a meal at the participating organizations, please present the coordinating form that is included in the newsletter to ensure proceeds are paid forward to support families in need. The CIA family appreciates your family's support for others, during the holiday season.
Is your scholar interested in attending the Clay Pom/Dance clinic? If so, see the detailed flyer included in this week's newsletter. The clinic, for scholars in grades 4th - 8th, will be held on December 27th and 28th from 11:00 - 2:30.
Be sure to check out the Great Day at CIA video performed by our very own Cougar Cast! You will not want to this way to "view" CIA. Click the link below...
Have a wonderful weekend!
Serving with scholars in mind,
Ms. Angela Ruiz, Ph.D. Candidate, Ed.S.
Barnes & Noble Event, Sunday, December 16
Yes! We are still planning to be at Barnes & Noble at University Park Mall all day on Sunday, December 16th to wrap presents for donations and kick off the Bookfair. Please put this date on your calendars and plan to stop by and visit, even if you cannot commit to a time slot for wrapping gifts. Any purchases made in the store or online that day with the coupon code will help CIA get new books for the library. Included in the newsletter is a link for the necessary coupon with the barcode needed for the purchases to give credit to CIA. Ms. Simpson will also have copies of the barcode available in the store on the 16th, for those who need one. That code will only help us raise money for books if used on December 16th, the day of the event. So if you are planning to buy books in December, we encourage our families to buy them from Barnes & Noble on December 16th!
We invite our CIA families to come and cheer on our scholars that are performing that day. The performance schedule is as follows:
2:00 - 2:30 CIA Orchestra Ensemble
2:30 - 3:00 CIA Cougarettes Dance and Sing-A-Long
3:00 - 4:00 CIA Battle Club Readers in the Children's Area
Not an ordinary NUT day!
All funds raised will support the CIA Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program.
Popcorn is making a comeback!
PTSO - has a new name!
Previously known as PTSO, the Parent Teacher Student Committee (PTSC) met this week. If you are looking to be a part of the committee, be sure to join us for the next meeting that will be held on January 10th at 5:30 P.M. in the Media Center.
Meet the PTSC's Executive Team: President: Corrina Milito
Vice President: Mindy Fountain
Treasurer: Jennifer Greenlee
Secretary: Maeve Milito
Looking forward: for the 2019 - 2020 school year, we will need a President and Secretary due to Mrs. Milito and her daughter Maeve looking to support the school in other areas.
Basketball News:
Our CIA athletes ended the boys' basketball season this week with the following record:
Varsity 3 Wins - 12
Junior Varsity 1 Win - 11
Varsity: despite the record, the CIA Varsity team grew as a team and showed improvement throughout the season. The Varsity team learned to enjoy playing the game. This was evident with the Win that ended the season, 51-39!
Junior Varsity: has been competitive all season. The JV team lost several games with a final score of less than 5 points to victory.
We encourage our CIA families and scholars to join us in cheering on the JV athletes in the season ending tournament that will be held on Saturday, December 15th at Edison.
STCO Candy Grams
Oh, no! The last day to send a candy gram is Monday, Dec. 17th! So grab those quarters while your still can, and send some tasty holiday cheer before time runs out!
Want to be a STCO Member?
It is not too late! If you are interested in becoming a member of CIA’s Student Council, please see your teacher for a sign-up sheet. If both your Homebase teacher and parent/guardian approve it, you still have the chance to represent your class and CIA to ASPIRE TO INSPIRE!
Making Good Choices:
Here is another way to help your children grow up to be respectful and kind, and to have the self-respect they need to make the right choices, both now and in the future.
Stand strong:
It is difficult for children to deal with situations in which their classmates, neighbors, siblings, or friends are behaving in a bad or cruel manner. Help them be prepared by role-playing ahead of time—act out situations they might face and see how they’d react. Talk with them about other ways to deal with the peer pressure, and let them know that, while standing up to their friends or peers might temporarily make them less popular with that group, in the long run they will have earned the respect of those whose opinions matter more.
Look for more ways to help your children grow up to make the right choices in past and upcoming issues of the Cougar Courier.
Gather your Box Tops to raise money for CIA
Yes, it is true...if our CIA families collect box tops, we earn money.
Here is how this works: CIA families, every time you use a General Mills product, cut off the BoxTop label and send it to school with your scholar. 400 scholars X 10 BoxTops per scholar = $400 for CIA! This is a fantastic opportunity because there is no need to purchase anything special. Many families end up with General Mills products in their homes after a trip to the store. We encourage each family to ask your friends, relatives and neighbors to do the same. Begin your search for the Box Top label! A collection box will be placed in the main office; please send all labels to school with your scholar.
