From Mr. Lucita

Welcome Back!! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break and didn’t forget to practice over the holidays! It’s that dedication to practicing at home that will help our band continue to improve. Parents please help us continue our musical journey by making sure your kiddos bring their instrument home and practice regularly! Now here is some important information as we jump right back into an active band schedule.

We first want to share that we are super excited to begin the competitive season for Johnson HS’s first ever Winter Guard! This group is off to a great start and has been working hard over the holidays getting ready to perform. Their weekly rehearsal schedule is posted on the Jaguar Band calendar and we can’t wait to see how far they go!! The sky is the limit!

Saturday, January 11th are the TMEA Area band auditions! The auditions will be held at Westlake High School! Let’s wish our three Jaguar Band students Travis Miller, Hannah Belden and Parker Taylor the very best of luck as they audition for a seat in the Texas All State Band!!!

Also, coming up quickly is the UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest. UIL Solo and Ensemble will be held at Hays HS on Saturday, February 1st. All Jaguar Band students will be participating in this event unless they are academically ineligible. Students should have already been practicing their solo and will begin practicing with their piano accompanist starting Monday, January 20th. That official accompanist rehearsal schedule will be distributed later this week. Each student will have 2 rehearsals with their accompanist. These rehearsals are extremely important and can not be rescheduled! Students, please make sure that you are musically prepared and on time for your accompanist. Those students that have not paid their $25 accompanist fee should bring it this week!

The JHS Wind Ensemble will continue their regularly scheduled weekly after school rehearsals on Mondays 4:30-6:00 starting on January 13th. We will also schedule weekly sectional rehearsals. These sectionals will focus on the small details of the music and individual student accountability as we prepare for UIL Concert and Sight-reading contest this spring! Sectionals are required of all students regardless of eligibility. Wind Symphony rehearsals and sectionals will begin in February. A detailed schedule will be issued as we get closer!

SOMETHING NEW this spring semester will be a new ensemble that is open to EVERYONE! “MOJO Steel” will be Johnson High School’s official Steel Drum Ensemble. Yes, you read correctly, this ensemble will be open to everyone! That’s right, not just percussionists, but ALL Jaguar Band members! There will be a google form coming out soon in an effort to gauge interest! Please be on the lookout and sign up if interested!

Let’s have a great first week back and can’t wait to see everyone on Tuesday!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! to host TCGC in February!

Calling all Jaguar Band Families! We need your help to host the Texas Color Guard Circuit competition in February! Color Guards from across the state will come to Johnson High School to compete in the Texas Color Guard Circuit competition.

Hosting a large competition requires a lot of help! The Jaguar Band directors have asked us for ADULT VOLUNTEERS to help set up on Friday, February 27th and help host the competition on Saturday, February 28th.

These volunteer opportunities are captured in the sign-up genius linked below. There are a lot of different types of opportunities for all to contribute! Sign up below and help us make a great first impression on our fellow Texas programs!

Please note that, because a schedule will not be finalized until closer to the event, TIMES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE!

We will also be requesting DONATIONS for concession stand items as the competition draws near. If you would like to get a jump on your donation, we are asking that families donate at least ONE CASE (12 count) of the following:

Flutes: Sprite, 12 oz.

Bb and Bass Clarinets: Dr. Pepper, 12 oz.

Saxophones (alto, tenor, and bass): Coke, 12 oz.

Brass (trumpet, french horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba): Chips (multi-pack, snack size)

Percussion/Double Reeds: Gatorade, 12 oz.

Color Guard: Candy (M&Ms, Snickers, Skittles, AirHeads, Trolli, etc)

*Once the semester begins, you can send your donation to the band hall with your student anytime before Friday, February 21st.

All profits, except for the bulk of ticket sales which go to TCGC and the merchandise sold by its exclusive vendor, will go to the Jaguar Band program. As you all know, it takes a lot of resources to support a growing and competitive program. Next year it is expected that our program will increase by 80 to 100 students!

Please help us maximize this fundraising opportunity so that the Jaguar Band’s 2nd year will be even more amazing than its 1st! Send in your donations and sign up!

Thanks in advance for the contribution of your time and donations!

While you might see some things that do not apply to your student, having too much information may be better than not having enough!

Visit the Johnson Band Website for information on how to sync the Charms calendar to your phone. "How to sync" links are located above calendar. Just click on link appropriate for your type of phone!
