Homecoming Edition

HMS Students Show Their Spirit

HMS students celebrated homecoming week by showing off their fun and creative school spirit! As we celebrated the excitement leading up to our Pep Rally, the Community Barbecue and the HS Varsity Football game we got to have some fun dressing up for each of the designated spirit days.

Building Partnerships that extend beyond "Back to School Night"

The 6th and 7th/8th grade Back to School events were held on September 14th and 22nd. The events were well attended and provided the opportunity for parents and guardians to see the world their child inhabits every day and to meet with teachers, staff and administrators. It is one of the best ways to enhance the home to school partnerships. If you were unable to attend and are seeking information regarding your child's schedule and course expectations, please call to the HMS Main Office at 305-8600 for assistance.

Mindful Schools

Mindfulness is the approach of focusing on the present moment in order to reduce stress and increase achievement. Here at HMS, teachers and staff have been incorporating mindfulness strategies in their work over the past few years. The mindfulness-in-education movement aligns well with the social-emotional-learning (SEL) initiatives that we have been promoting for decades. Both aim to teach children to build self-awareness, effectively handle their emotions, and emphatically manage their relationships. Mindfulness, however, takes more of an inside-out approach by helping students to slow down, intentionally focus their attention from moment to moment, and build compassion. Mindfulness strategies may include brief, "2 minute breaks" that focus on breathing and movement. Research around mindfulness has proven that a student's academic achievement, future success and overall happiness is significantly impacted by the attainment of three skills, each supported by mindfulness: self-regulation, focus and resilience.
