Food shortages and supply chain issues may impact school meals temporarily

Due to a lack of availability of raw ingredients and labor to produce, unload and transfer products, some food, beverage, and/or paper products normally provided to students may not always be available. These supply chain issues may necessitate last-minute menu changes and food substitutions. Stay up to date with the most recent menu changes by visiting our online menus or downloading the Nutrislice App.

The Food and Nutrition Services Department is working closely with distributors to source menu options that meet the federal guidelines for Child Nutrition Programs. You can be assured that meals will remain balanced, healthy, and plentiful.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we do our best to meet the needs of our children. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Food and Nutrition Services Coordinator Spencer Fischer at 651-683-6956 or spencer.fischer@district196.org

National Hispanic Heritage Month

From September 15 to October 15 AVHS celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who inspire others. The AVHS Library Media Center has curated a number of books and other resources in addition to activities/information offered through advisory and TV monitors in the building.

Discover documents, exhibits, films, blog posts, and more from the National Archives and Presidential Libraries that highlight Hispanic culture.

Know anyone who would be a good fit?

We are excited to share that AVHS is hiring a Bookkeeper / Arts & Activities Secretary. The position is a Group 1 Clerical position; full-time - 8 hours per day, 12-months of the year.

The position requires a basic understanding of accounting principles and provides high school financial reporting to various administrators and staff within the high school and district office. In addition, this position provides secretarial support to the Arts and Activities Director and Performing Arts department. The ideal candidate is able to build trust, communicate that people matter, and help others succeed in a culturally, ethnically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse school community. Bilingual preferred; Spanish and/or Somali.

This position will be posted on the District 196 website in a few days. In the meantime, feel free to email drew.mons@district196.org

COVID-19 Notification

Our commitment is to keep you informed of all positive, lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases at Apple Valley HS. During the week of September 26 to October 3rd, we were notified of 4 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the AVHS community. The previous week's total was 2.

If you or a household member develops COVID-19 symptoms, stay at home, contact your physician and call our school nurse, Lori Henke, at 952-431-8220. Contact our School Nurse, Lori Henke, at 952-431-8220 or by email at lori.henke@district196.org

Mask Reminder

A reminder that all students, staff, and visitors are required to wear a face mask indoors when inside District 196 buildings. This includes if you are coming into the building during school hours or attending a volleyball game, conferences or any indoor event in the evening.

Face masks are optional for outdoor events.

What If My Student Tests Postive for COVID?

Anyone experiencing illness should follow the Minnesota Department of Health Recommended COVID-19 Decision Tree, stay home, and are strongly recommended to get tested. If a person tests positive for COVID-19 and has symptoms, they should stay home and isolate for at least 10 days from the time the symptoms begin until symptoms have improved AND they have been fever-free for 24 hours without use of fever-reducing medication. All families are required to report their student(s) positive test results to our school nurse, Lori Henke, by calling 952-431-8220

Common to other illnesses, once our nurse is notified of an extended absence, she contacts our Assistant Principal, Pete Buesgens, who in turn reaches out to teachers to let them know that the student will be working on school from home and to ensure that all assignments are available in Schoology, or to make arrangements if assignments need to be sent home or picked-up as needed. We do not share private data about the health condition unless it is pertinent to the class activities.

Monday, October 11th is Indigenous Peoples Day

Indigenous Peoples Day is a holiday that celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories, cultures, and contributions to this world.

Discussions of Indigenous Peoples Day allow students, parents, and families to engage and celebrate the unique history of *Mni Sota, the land where the water reflects the clouds. It is an opportunity to highlight the contributions of Indigenous peoples which make our communities stronger.

District 196 has a thriving Native American community. Currently, we have over 525 indigenous students across the district representing over 45 different sovereign nations. A majority of our students are Ojibwe and Dakota/Lakota.

We would highly recommend you visit the For our Future: An Advocate's Guide to Supporting Indigenous Peoples Day. This website was created through IllumiNative - a nonprofit initiative designed to increase the visibility of - and challenge the negative narrative about - Native Nations and peoples in American society.

More resources are available in the District 196 American Indian Education's October Newsletter.
