Will You Be Mine?

Members of NNHS jazz choir serenade a student with "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz on Valentine's Day. The group went around the school performing singing grams to un-suspecting students.

Hard Work Pays Off

Fine Arts students accept awards at the Board of Education meeting on Monday, Feb. 4. The BOE recognized Fine Arts students who have received state or national awards in their disciplines.

Hitting the Right Note

Lonfellow choir students compete at district contest under the direction of Christine Hrubik on Friday, Mar. 1. The group took home straight 1's and the judges praised them for their outstanding performance.

Kind Words

Lakeview elementary music performs their program, "Kindness Rocks," under the direction of music teacher Jordan Nguyen. The program was part of the Great Kindness Challenge Lakeview held from Jan. 28 through Feb. 1.

Taking Home the Gold

NNHS Speech & Debate team pose with their trophy after competing in the Deer Creek Tournament. The team took home a first place win for the event.

The Art of Storytelling

IMS art teacher Dan Harris stops by NHS teacher Tracy Gibson's art class for an impromptu story-telling session. Dan visited the class during a free hour while at NHS.

Improvising

NHS percussion ensemble performs "Londonderry Air" in the band room on Friday, Mar. 1. NHS live streamed their performance on Facebook due to their concert being canceled because of weather.

Sing and Be Happy

NPS choir hosts their All-City performance Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 11 and 12. The South performance (Monday) featured Norman High, Alcott and Irving while the North performance (Tuesday) featured Norman North, Whittier and Longfellow.

Group Effort

Members of the newly formed Norman North Fine Arts Council pose for a picture after a meeting. The council was started by choir and orchestra student Alex Irwin. The three primary drives of the council are inclusion, representation and collaboration.

Art Collaboration

Fourth graders at Monroe complete class projects under the direction of artist Annie Doan. Doan was the guest artist for Monroe during the month of February. The completed canvases will be in a live arts auction on April 23.

Perspective

NHS art students take another trip to Jocelyn Russell's Norman art studio to view "Secretariat" before it is moved to its permanent home. Some students were allowed to work on small parts of Secretariat. The video below shows a size comparison of the statue to human ratio.

Debating the Outcome

Students and teachers prepare for the Mnemosyne Speech and Debate Tournament. The event was held at Norman North on Feb. 22-23.

The Winning Note

NHS string players Henry Ingels (pictured first), Catie Thai (pictured second to last) and Surya Miranda (pictured last) receive medals for winning the Buttram String competition put on by the Oklahoma City Orchestra League. Ingels won for violin, Thai won for violin in quartet and Miranda won for viola in quartet.


The competition is made possible by a gift from Randy and Kathy Buttram in memory of Dorsey and Phyllis Buttram and the founders of the competition, Merle and Frank Buttram. Merle was a founder and member of the Ladies Music Club String Orchestra which grew and became the Oklahoma City Symphony Orchestra in 1924.

Culturally Aware

African storyteller Jahruba Lambeth performs for IMS students on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Lambeth was born and raised in Oklahoma but share's his family's heritage through his songs, chants and stories.

CONGRATS!

-NHS and NNHS orchestras both received superior ratings at contest.


-NHS students Sara Moore and Callahan Stroud were named Academic All-Americans by the National Speech & Debate Association.


-Norman High School’s art and literary magazine "Soupstone 45" has received the Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) award from the National Council of Teachers of English.
