Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
March 8, 2019
Another Great Week!
This week was filled with LOTS of indoor recess and restless 3rd Graders. They NEED to get outside for fresh air, exercise, and to socialize with their friends. Hopefully today is the last round of inclement weather for the YEAR!!!
The third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers had a few meetings this week about the new iLearn test that is required by the state for all students in grades 3-5. This year is the first year for this test, so we are all unfamiliar with the format. However, there are test exemplars that the Indiana Department of Education have released for us to use to help students anticipate what they are expected to do. One of the biggest differences between the iLearn and the ISTEP test for third graders is that they will take the entire test online. This presents challenges for students that struggle with keyboarding. Students are required to type an essay given a specific genre. We have really ramped up our writing this year by having students type a lot of their work on Google Docs. I struggle with this because I believe students should still be developing their fine motor writing skills. If you would like your child to practice keyboarding at home, there are a few programs that he/she can use. They are familiar with Typing Without Tears and use it frequently here at school. Before this program, students used typing.com. Either program is fine.
I can't wait to see who has advanced to the next round of the March Madness Reading Challenge. See the picture of the board outside the 3rd grade pod below. 13 out of 20 students in Room 9 are participating!
Did you know there are 14 school days left until Spring Break? We will work extremely hard up until the very last minute!
That's all I have for now...
Enjoy your weekend!

We continue to memorize this poem...
Believe in Yourself
Set your standards high
You deserve the best
Try for what you want
And never settle for less!
Believe in yourself
No matter what you choose
Keep a winning attitude
And you can never lose!
Be sure to watch the video below. It shows the students participating in an activity called Musical Conversations. The purpose of this activity is to get students to talk and interact with more than their regular friends in class. As the music plays, students wander. When the music stops, whoever they are standing beside is who they have a brief discussion with- each student must greet each other, ask a question, look each other in the eye, and show interest in what the other person is saying. They do a great job and I absolutely love listening to their thoughtful greetings and discussions.
