Biotechnology Project
By Caitlin Ormond
What is the role of DNA in biotechnology?
Without DNA there would be no use for biotechnology. Biotechnology changes, replaces, or combines the organism(s) DNA. By change, replacing, or combining DNA the cells genetic makeup is changed make it better (or worse).
How is biotechnology used in DNA testing?
Biotechnology can help in catching a criminal. After the crime occurred, evidence from the crime scene is used to find the suspect. Items like skin, hair, blood, spit, or anything that includes the DNA from the criminal will be used in catching him. The DNA samples from the skin or spit are compared to the DNA from the suspect. The DNA that matches the suspect is guilty. This process is "one of the most powerful and widely known applications of biotechnology today." ("BIOTECHNOLOGY and its APPLICATIONS")
How is biotechnology used in the health industry in making medicines like penicillin and insulin?
Biotechnology is used in the health industry in making medicines like penicillin and insulin. Biotechnology has contributed to the discovery and manufacturing of traditional small molecule pharmaceutical drugs as well as drugs that are the product of biotechnology ("Biotechnology" Wiki). Biotechnology can also produce drugs faster and cheaper. These drugs can range from helping a headache to saving someone’s life.
How is biotechnology used in agriculture?
Biotechnology can be used to greatly improve agriculture. Biotechnology can change the food we eat today and make them healthier, longer lasting, and resistant to disease. With the invention of biotechnology, humans can improve the food we eat. We can make foods heartier for developing countries to feed their population and we can make foods healthier for developed countries that struggle with the effects of obesity. Also, food that would have been wiped out by a disease can become resistant through biotechnology. All around, biotechnology can alter food in the agriculture system to improve life.
How is biotechnology used in enviromental clean-up (bioremediation)?
Biotechnology can help greatly in environmental clean-up. Scientist can use waste eating bacteria to improve the living situations around many dumps and manufacturing waste plants. Through bioremediation, scientists can introduce different waste materials to already waste eating bacteria or add more bacteria to the mix. Once the bacteria finish digesting the waste, the byproduct is a harmless substance that is safe for the environment and humans. Scientists can also change the byproduct to be beneficial towards biofuel too.
What are the potential negative impacts of biotechnology?
- Although biotechnology can be very helpful, it could also be very deadly
- Many people agree that biotechnology is too risky and that biotechnology invades the laws of natrure
- Biotechnology is extremely expansive and our country may not have the money to fund it
- The altered food can mix with the unaltered food
- Creation of "super" weeds and other environmental risks
- Could cause allergic reactions with people who suffer from some type of food allergy
- Long-term effects of some biotech products are not yet known (this includes new medicines)
Biotechnology in the Real World
Medicine - Medical scientists work on discovering the pathogen causing harm in the patient's body. They use biotechnology to conduct tests and make discoveries. Medical scientists help in the advancement in drugs and other helpful medicines.
Agriculture - Greenhouse or field technicians work on and care for plants biotechnology altered. They often care for them in a greenhouse or out on a field. They have to weed, water, pot, and watch over the altered plant.
Genetics- Genetic engineering research scientists manipulate the genes in plants, animals, and microorganisms. The altering of these organisms can lead to the development of new medicines and antibiotics. They must be able to work with biotechnology to find their results.
Food Science-
Food Product or Ingredient Development Scientists help develop better tasting, healthier, and cheaper foods. To achieve this goal, the scientists must be able to work with biotechnology.
