PTSA News
FunDay is Saturday, March 13, 2021…but what is it?
Traditionally FunDay is Ridgeway’s one and ONLY fundraiser of the year taking place at the school and bringing students, families, and staff together for a day of FUN!
For 2021, FunDay will continue to be the one and only fundraiser to support Ridgeway, but we will do it in a virtual style. Similar to past years, students will be able to participate in the Big Drawing by selling tickets (more information on this process to come home soon) with the actual Big Drawing for packages of fun and prizes to take place on FunDay, March 13. And like last year, there will be a Silent Auction that will START on Saturday, March 13, and be open that week via an online auction (link to come). But this year, to keep the FUN in FunDay, teachers and staff will be offering activities via Zoom (full list and sign-up genius is in the works) from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 13, for the students to enjoy and participate. Any supplies needed for the project or activity will be sent home during virtual pick up, or the Friday before FunDay for in-person students.
So, where does the money go that is raised through FunDay?
All of the money raised goes to the Ridgeway PTSA, and each Unit receives funds for its teachers to spend as desired on items from books, supplies, school events, field trips as well as field day. Funds support the school as a whole and are distributed to specialists and other needs that vary from year to year.
What is the Big Drawing?
In the weeks leading up to FunDay, students will have the opportunity to sell tickets (Printed tickets will be sent home, as well as an online ticket printing link.) Each ticket gives the buyer one entry into the big shuffler. Beginning at noon on FunDay, names will be drawn one at a time with the “winner” contacted to select a prize. A list of prizes and prize packages will be sent home before FunDay. Past Big Draw Prizes have included TVs, bikes, tickets to events, museums, and gift cards for fun activities like Great Wolf Lodge, all donated to and collected by parent volunteers.
What is a Golden Ticket?
As part of the incentive to sell tickets, students are entered into the Golden Ticket drawing (one entry per $30 in Big Drawing tickets sold and turned in by the due date). Past Golden Ticket Prizes have been gaming systems, electronics, and other exciting items!
How can I help?
If you are interested in helping gather donations, have a good contact with a specific business, or would simply like to donate something on your own, please contact the Silent Auction coordinator, Amanda Fues at amandasfues@gmail.com. Past donations have included everything from babysitting, quilts, delicious desserts, to photography.

ART
I am so excited to have students back in the art room and to be able to work with your children in-seat! It is a joy to see their wonderful creations and to be able to give them immediate feedback on their progress! We have been learning a lot and are moving ahead at a steady pace.
All Units are spending time reviewing routines and procedures for the art room in our lessons. The focus for our current unit is the “Still Life." We have been discussing what a still life is, identifying it when we see it, discussing artists (Georgia O’keeffe and Vincent Van Gogh), looking at lots of examples, and of course, creating our own still lifes in our artwork!
Unit A
In our first lesson, Unit A students created an artwork by drawing from a still life present in the room. We set up still life tables in the middle of the room with a collection of random objects for students to practice drawing from observation. Students were provided the choice to draw what they saw in front of them, or to draw something from memory, such as meaningful objects from home. In our next lesson, students will draw flowers inspired by Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, and show pattern/repetition in the vase. In our final lesson for this unit, students will continue to draw from observation, and we will discuss in more depth how to draw by “seeing."
Unit B
Unit B began our still life unit by drawing from observation. Students had the opportunity to draw objects they could see in front of them, or to draw objects from their memory of things that are meaningful in their lives. In our next lesson, students will focus on individual objects from still lifes. We will first focus on drawing a mug. The mug is an excellent way to practice drawing cylindrical form, and recognize it in other artwork and our surroundings. Students will also create a design, or add pattern/repetition to their mugs. Next we will draw shoes. Students will use their shoes as our still life object for this activity. We will discuss drawing from observation to draw what we “see," and introduce a new technique in drawing, continuous contour line drawing.
Unit C
Unit B began our still life unit by drawing from observation. Students had the opportunity to draw objects they could see in front of them, or to draw objects from their memory of things that are meaningful in their lives. Students then practiced drawing geometric still lifes. We drew basic shapes such as circles, rectangles, and triangles, then turned them into geometric forms such as cubes, cylinders, and prisms by shading them with a pencil. The students were instructed to show at least 3 different values, smooth transitions between values, add a shadow and a table line. Students used the geometric forms as the basis for drawing slightly more complex objects such as foods and drinks to create a still life that shows some of their favorites.
We are excited to see where our artwork and creativity will take us! Our next unit will cover architecture. We will look at famous architecture from around the world, discuss building materials, design our own buildings, and more!
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Mr. Bickell
