Weekly Community Updates - April 14, 2023
Dear Students and Families,
Welcome back from spring break! I hope all students enjoyed their break and is ready to finish the school year strong. This week had a lot of excited energy to be back on campus. It was great to see students from an elementary school on campus and experience our foods and nutrition class!
As we start to approach May, it is time for seniors to calendar the end of the year events. Please be sure to take a look at the important dates and let us know if you have any questions.
Take care,
Maritza Torres

Welcome, 4th Graders!
On Wednesday, April 12th, Sarah Fishstrom (class of 2018) who is a student teacher at Marjorie Tobias Elementary school, brought her fourth grade class to Oceana. Students made pizza with Laurie Hughes, Leo Vanneli and Jack VIgnaux, who are in the Culinary Arts class, and Sarah who was a Food and Nutrition student in her final year at Oceana. Sarah also brought her students to the school garden where they completed a scavenger hunt and saw Mr. Menard's two tortoises. It was a delight to have 4th graders and an alumni on campus. Many thanks to Denise Shreve who helped facilitate the event.
Ramadan
As some students will observe Ramadan, March 23-April 21, it’s important for us, as a school, to be mindful of religious practices that may take place during this time, including fasting and designated times of prayer. If your student needs additional support during this time, please contact the office, as the staff is here to help.
The JUHSD Food Services Department, upon request, will provide take-home lunches for students needing to eat at a later time in the day, along with signage messaging this, at each of the cafeteria registers.
As always, please reach out to OHS Principal Martiza Torres, (650) 550-7301 with any questions or concerns you may have.

Healthy Kids Survey
Each year, families across the state are asked to complete the California Healthy Kids survey. This survey provides a 360 degree assessment of our Sharks’ wellbeing as students, parents, and staff provide feedback on topics ranging from mental health to academics, substance use to community engagement. The survey, found here, should not take more than 30 minutes to complete and is used by the state of California and Oceana to identify additional opportunities to provide support. It is completely confidential, so please give us the most honest feedback you can. Thank you in advance for completing this survey and supporting Oceana in better meeting the needs of our Sharks.
