I’d like to thank our most recent Account Manager, Fred Lambrechts, for his efforts in working with the sales team to win and mobilise new contracts, and thanks also to Malcolm Kay and Angela Sayers for mobilising one each. Summer is always a very challenging period operationally, and I’d like to thank all of our security personnel in contract, and our account management teams, resourcers, recruitment team and PCC staff for getting us through such a busy period, which came hard on the heels of the terrorist atrocities in May and the step up to the Critical Threat Level – it’s been hard work and I thank you for your efforts.
A special mention to Joe Wise and congratulations on his promotion to Account Director at Deutsche Bank, combined with a thanks and farewell to Pete Messenger, DSM at DB, who leaves us after 19 years with the business – best of luck for the future Pete.

Awareness around acid attacks
Since 2014 acid attacks in the UK have increased and now happens on average to two people every day.
Crime statistics show that there were more than 450 acid attacks in London last year, with the number of attacks in the capital more than doubling since 2014.
The method that is commonly used is a water bottle wrapped in some form of material, while in a moving vehicle such as a moped.
Acid attacks are very rarely deadly, but victims may be left scarred, blinded, otherwise disabled and heavily traumatised.
The substance used is usually sulphuric acid (“vitriol”) or nitric acid. Less commonly, hydrochloric acid may be used, which is less damaging to victims.
In the UK, men are more likely to be victims than women, which is believed to be due to gang violence. Reportedly, gang members carry acid concealed in a drinks bottle, where police are more alert to conventional weapons such as knives or guns.
London is the UK’s centre of acid attacks – Metropolitan Police figures show over 1,800 assaults with a corrosive substance since 2010, with figures still rising year on year and 454 assaults reported in 2016.
What you should do in the event of an acid attack...
Advice from the London Ambulance Service on the steps to take if you or someone you are with has suffered a chemical burn are as follows:
•Remove the chemical causing the bun while protecting yourself. Wear gloves or use a towel or other suitable object.
•Remove contaminated clothing or jewellery to prevent further burning.
•Rinse the burn immediately with a gentle, steady stream of cool tap water over the burn for 10 or more minutes. A shower can be sued if available, and mild sop can be sued on skin safely. Always protect your eyes while washing acid off your skin.
•Loosely apply a dry bandage, gauze or clean cotton clothing.
•For minor burns (not affecting the face) take an over-the counter pain reliever, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.
•For further medical advice, call NHS 101.
Do you want a chance to volunteer through our Give A Day Of Your Time Programme?
1. English classes - Tuesday and Thursday 10.45am - 12.30pm (up to 4 people)
Volunteers will be supporting clients taking part in English classes to complete reading, writing, listening or speaking exercises (depending on the lesson taking place) and to develop their vocabulary and grammar skills.
2. Art Classes - Wednesdays 1.30 - 4.00pm (up to 6 people)
We are looking for volunteers to participate in art sessions run by clients – people that we help who are homeless or vulnerably housed – taking part in our peer mentor programme. All we ask of you is that you come along, take part in the session and tell us your thoughts about how it went afterwards. You don't need to have any art experience, just an interest in art and an enthusiasm to learn more about it. Peer led sessions will also be supported by a member of Providence Row staff.
3. Community Clean - Monday between 11.00am – 1.00pm (2 people)
The area surrounding our centre is somewhat neglected and tends to build up litter. We would like 2 volunteers to help make it pretty again! This ensures Providence Row remains a pleasant place for our clients and our neighbours. We will provide all the necessary gear and you’re welcome to stick around for a warm cup of tea afterwards.
4. Job Club - Tuesday between 1.15pm – 3.00pm (up to 4 people)
Volunteers will be working with our clients on their employability, helping them to develop their skills and find employment. This could involve working on CVs, researching jobs and applying for them and providing general assistance around the subject. This is a popular session with many regular attendees, so although suitable for one off volunteers, a regular commitment is preferred.
You could also be provided with a Grant from Interserve for your volunteering!
Special Thanks!
The client team has extended their thanks to all involved for escalating the matter quickly and remaining professional in the heated incident.

Tom's Final Words
Bad news is seemingly always in the news, with hurricanes, Brexit uncertainty, knife and acid attacks and terrorist atrocities. There’s not too much we can do about the first two, but in terms of terrorism and other attacks, we can all certainly play our part, by being alert, especially to suspicious behavior and hostile reconnaissance, both around our workplace and when travelling. Please report any incidents no matter how seemingly small or insignificant. Please also ensure that you are all familiar with the principles of the ‘Run, Hide. Tell’ advice and it would also be useful if you could find the time to watch the video from CPNI, available on You tube, called ‘Personnel Security – Eyes Wide Open’, which gives really helpful information re hostile reconnaissance.
Please stay alert, situationally aware, and above all, stay safe in the workplace and when travelling– remember the phrase ‘Work Safe, Home Safe’.
