EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Special Spring Break Edition for the Week of April 3, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Friends, Family, and FSA Supporters:
Now that Spring Break has begun, I hope everyone is relaxing and enjoying their loved ones. Whether you chose to spend time away at the beach, retreat to the mountains, or preferred to enjoy the comforts of home, I hope this week offers a chance to refresh and relax as we prepare to usher in the final phase of school beginning on Monday, April 10.
Last week was another exciting time at Fulton Science Academy. Our school was invited to the City of Alpharetta's Fifth Annual Business Awards Recognition Breakfast on Thursday, March 30, where we were honored by City Mayor, David Belle Isle, for various awards we received during 2016. This is the third year that Fulton Science Academy has received this award, and to be recognized alongside such impressive national and global companies was humbling, to say the least!
Mayor Isle provided a heartwarming keynote address and reaffirmed Alpharetta's growing economy and technology sector. Our school is very proud to be located in such a vibrant and caring community, one filled with more than 640 nationally and internationally recognized corporations who share our love of STEAM!
Last week, FSA also sent our middle school Model UN team to compete in New York City. Through this experience, students had the opportunity to strengthen research skills, public speaking skills, teamwork, negotiation, and writing skills. Perhaps most valuable was the students' opportunities to network with children from all over the country.
We were also very honored to learn this weekend that our own eighth-grade student, Arul Selvakumar, won two honors at the State Science Fair. Arul secured both a Second Honors Category Award, as well as a special award, the 2nd Place Merial Biotechnology Award, for his project that addressed the impact of Gaba Enriched Food on Autism Spectrum Disorders.
And, last, but certainly not least, recent news that Fulton Science Academy will send a record-breaking SEVEN academic teams to national/international finals this year was truly incredible! Each year, our school continues to strengthen our academic teams and having a chance to represent the state of Georgia in such an incredible way is an honor we truly treasure!
From all of us, to all of you, HAPPY SPRING BREAK! Please soak up all that vacation has to offer this week, and we look forward to welcoming our precious students once again next week. As always, please feel free to see me with questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Kenan Sener
Principal

High School History Academic Team will compete at the National History Bowl In Washington DC IN April
On March 18, two members of the FSA High School History Academic Team traveled to Newnan High School to compete in the 2017 Georgia State Championship History Bee and Bowl. Qualifying tests for the US Geography Olympiad and the US History Bowl were given at this event as well.
FSA team members, Sanjeev U. and Chloe R. participated. Sanjeev placed 2nd by taking the US Geography Olympiad Qualifying Test and is qualified to participate at nationals. Chloe took the US history qualifying test and her score qualifies her for competing in that event at nationals. As a team, they finished 3rd in the Junior Varsity Division of the History Bowl. This qualifies them to participate in the National History Bowl in Washington, D.C., April 21-23.
Congratulations to these hard-working, dedicated history students. As you will see below, lots of preparation and fast fingers can often mean the difference in results. Our new History Academic Team formed in January and students are already very competitive in the state level competition. They and other team mates will now be preparing for the national competition, so be sure and wish them good luck.
Middle SChool Model UN IN nEW yORK

As parents, we are constantly reminding our children to care about today, to take good decisions, and to put greater effort in ‘now’ so that they can reap the benefits later when they are in college.
The questions is, can our children do that or can they do that well?
In this talk, Sucheta Kamath will discuss the relationship between executive functions and self-regulation as it relates to goal management and future thinking. She will share some practical tips to help our students become ‘future-aware’.
Debrief - Road to College Night
The college fair lasted about 45 minutes long and then the college reps sat on the stage for a College Panel interview and Q&A session. Each college rep spoke briefly about their school and answered any questions from the audience. Parents and students left with the knowledge of the various schools, resources, and networking connections. We hope to offer this college fair each Spring at FSA.
Third Grade Market Day- a lesson in economics
Not only did the third graders get to buy and sell from each other, but drew in crowds of parents, teachers, and even our middle and high school students! With an increase in demand, many students sold out of their one-of-a-kind products! Students sold everything from massages, to advice, sweet treats, slime, photo frames, and sports memorabilia. According to Rylar C., "Placement is everything when it comes to how much money you will get!" Thank you to all our teachers, staff, students, and parents for their participation and support!
Pre-k THRU 3rd Grade visited the Atlanta Botanical Gardens
This was especially exciting for 2nd grade as they were able to connect classroom learning of a frog's life cycle to that of the Poison Dart Frogs' in the exhibit. They also observed up close how plants adapt and defend themselves in different environments. Lunch was enjoyed in beautiful Piedmont Park as we were fortunate and missed the rain showers. Students' afternoons ended strolling through the colorful tulips and checking out the new children's exhibit in the gardens!
FSA Parent Interviewed About I85 Highway Collapse on WSB TV
We have always taken great pride in the dedicated families who have supported FSA and have helped it to become the award-winning school that it is today. This morning, we learned that one of our precious families is considering a temporary second residence in Alpharetta to avoid a potential FOUR HOUR daily commute to school from Decatur after yesterday's I-85 highway collapse.
We are speechless and humbled and feel so very honored that one of our own FSA families would consider going to such lengths to ensure that there was no interruption in their child's education. We know our caring FSA is community is already working to provide assistance to the Lindo family, and our thoughts and prayers extend to all those families in and around Atlanta who have been affected by this unexpected highway collapse

Pre-K Lego Club
On Thursdays, Pre-K gets super excited to build and create with Legos. They work cooperatively and engage their minds designing airports, construction sites, trains and anything else their imaginations devise. The students also measure, sort and channel Mr. Kaya as little Robotic engineers in training.
Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
Students Raise More than $1,500 for St. Baldrick's Foundation
We are happy to say that FSA raised $1,584 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Our student council members did a great job motivating their peers to raise money for such an important cause. The student council members shared information with their homerooms and encouraged everyone to purchase St. Baldrick’s shirts and to donate money to the cause, which aims to eradicate childhood cancer.
As promised, if the school raised $1,500 or more, Mr. Parlak agreed to shave his head. Please stay tuned for more details on this event!
You can learn more about this organization as well as continue to donate online. https://www.stbaldricks.org/ Thank you to everyone who made this event such a success!
