Welcome Back to Bear Tavern!

Back to School Issue - August 20, 2015

Upcoming Events at Bear Tavern:

Greetings from Mr. Turnbull

Dear Bear Tavern Families,

A lot has gone on this summer at Bear Tavern. Our custodians and maintenance staff have been working tirelessly to thoroughly clean all rooms and to fix or paint anything necessary. Our supervisors have been revising curriculum and helping me get adjusted to a new school district. Ms. Kopcow, with help from Mrs. Nami, has been keeping the office running, ordering supplies, updating computer systems and student records, and much, much more. It would take a whole book to explain everything that Ms. Kopcow has done this summer at Bear Tavern! Staff members also supported learning with our Summer Reading Program and our Kindergarten Camp in the month of July. I have also had a chance to meet with the PTO president, Mrs. Linthorst, and Trustee, Mrs. Bowman, who filled me in on all of the incredible PTO events and activities this year. Cooperation between families and the school is critical to creating a wonderful experience for our students. Please consider getting involved and supporting our BTPTO (for PTO Handbook click HERE, for info. about the Bear Essentials Annual Appeal click HERE).

Summer is great, but September is a wonderful time of year; we cannot wait until we can welcome back the best part of Bear Tavern – all of our students!

This is an exciting time at our school, and we chose a school-wide theme for the year to reflect how we feel: OUR TIME IS NOW… We believe that it represents the positive course that we are on and all of the potential that our students, staff, and families have.

Our time is now to work hard, to be leaders, to take risks, to become problem solvers, and to find our passions in order to be successful in school and life.

I could not be happier to embark upon this journey with you and to show everyone all of the special things about Bear Tavern.

I will work hard to share the fantastic learning opportunities, activities and programs that are provided at the school through a variety of vehicles, including emails, text messages and social media. Please consider following Bear Tavern and me on Twitter (www.twitter.com) to see the wonderful things happening throughout the year.

Our goal is to provide students with real-world connections that make learning exciting and meaningful, as well as to help students wonder, explore, question, and apply what they know to the community beyond our school. We want to develop thinkers, leaders and citizens who do not give up, are confident and who bring enthusiasm to all of their endeavors, present and future.

I look forward to working together and I am certain that it will be a great year. At Bear Tavern, OUR TIME IS NOW!

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything at all, have any questions or feedback.

I would like to thank everyone who took part in our inaugural Read Aloud on July 30th. We have been practicing and improving and are ready for another session! Please join me on Wednesday, August 26 at 3:30 pm for the 2nd Bear Tavern Read Aloud. Please see the bottom of this newsletter to join in or click HERE. I have one book already picked and will take requests for another. If you have a great idea, just email and I'll pick one suggestion from the community!

New Faces at Bear Tavern in 2015-16!

Familiar Faces Back at Bear Tavern!

Do you have a career, hobby or interest that could help our students and that you'd like to share?

At Bear Tavern, we realize that learning is greatly enhanced by the ability to make real-world connections and to utilize a variety of sources of information and knowledge to help our students to learn. We also want students to be active members of their community and hope to enhance the skills that we teach through information/presentations from passionate, informed citizens. If you have a career, hobby or interest that you would be willing to share and may help create learning opportunities that go beyond the walls of our school, please consider sharing with a class, grade-level or more!

We cannot guarantee that we will be able to arrange for all interested parties to share or present this year, but we are attempting to build a bank of local experts who would like to share aspects of their careers or interests with students then reaching out as opportunities present themselves based upon what we are learning in a given subject/unit. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at christopherturnbull@hvrsd.org.

5th Grade STEM!

This year we will be opening our 5th Grade STEM program. We will be building off of the successes of last year's 4th grade STEM program. The cutting edge program will still welcome students from each of Hopewell Regional School District's elementary schools as well as some students from outside of the district! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The program will teach all subjects through the lens of 'STEM' and will put a premium on problem solving and collaboration. We are excited to expand our program and will even work to infuse the arts into our instruction creating some STEAM!

Don't Forget to 'Adopt a Bulletin Board'

We are hoping to greatly eclipse last year's participation in the 'adopt a bulletin board' program. If your family is interested in designing and decorating a bulletin board before the start of school, please contact Lauren Kopcow in the main office. You can unleash a hidden talent that you did not know you had! It is very important for me to create an environment in which parents are welcome and are partners in what we do at Bear Tavern. Please consider designing a bulletin board that focuses on our school theme or our community.
