In Case You Missed It:
All benchmark and NC Check In scores all came in Monday. Data Dives should be the topic of PLC conversations on Tuesday for math and reading and Thursday for Science. Third Quarter benchmarks and check in will take place the last week of March before we go on Spring Break which will enable us to have scores back by the time we return. More detailed information will be sent later.
We were awarded a $500 math and science grant from Cruizers Convenience Stores last week. I will be talking with our Math and Science Dept Team Leaders to get feedback on how this money might be spent. If you have any suggestions, please share with Team Leaders.
NC Legislators did pass a compromise to the K-3 class size reduction this week. You can read more information here. Hopefully, this action will take districts across the state out of limbo and all can move forward with plans using the allotted funding and a realistic timeline.
Many of our students were reaching and rising this week. Anna Boone, Valery Peyares, and Mike Rodriguez took first, second, and third places in the Lee County Soil and Water Speech contest at the McSwain Center on Friday. On Saturday, Anna Boone won the Lee County Schools Spelling Bee and has been awarded an all expenses paid trip to Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. Alexis Duntz and Harmony West (former Stallion) won The Amazing Shake contest in July while attending Project Lift Off and were awarded an all expenses paid trip to Amazing Shake National Competition at Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, GA. These young ladies represented us well with Peggy Mann this weekend! #proudprincipal
I received an email from Heather McBurnett, parent and teacher at Greenwood. She wanted to show her appreciation for everything we do at SLMS by providing snacks in the PLC room on Valentine's Day. Check out the PLC room on Wednesday. I will be giving thank you notes to our Grade Level Leaders after Wednesday, so everyone can express their appreciation.
Well, I have totally been amazed with the candy bar sale put on my our PTSO. We collected OVER $20,000 which mean a profit of OVER $10,000 for our school. We knew we would have some loss but it was so minimal compared to the profit. Families were still sending in money on Thursday and Friday. PTSO will continue to accept money until there is no more turned in. Thank you for all your support. Please express your appreciation for the hard work of our PTSO if you have their children or see them around school. Tina Harrington, Amy Matthews, Jessica Jackson, Carol Sloan, Joy Phillips, Wendy Bryan, Elizabeth Branch, and Ashley Parker have done an exceptional job.
Recruitment for AVID elective has begun. You will begin to see information on our announcements, having 8th grade AVID elective students visit homerooms, and receive information from AVID Site team members concerning the application and interview process. Please remember that AVID elective is a system of supports for our "middle of the road" students to help prepare them for higher level classes to ensure they are ready for college. AVID is not a remedial course or a place to put students with behavioral problems in hopes to "fix" them. Students do not place out of because they are doing "better". If you have questions or misunderstandings, see a member of SLMS AVID Site Team. We need you all to encourage students that you believe would benefit from the AVID elective classroom to apply.
