Welcome to the Library
August 2018
Flexible Schedule
Third through fifth graders are completely welcome to come use the library as individuals throughout the day. I don't mind at all if students come in for checkout while another class is going on as long as they can work quietly and self-sufficiently. We will be ready to start checking out books next week.
Classroom Job: Librarian
First Library Lesson: Learning Our Procedures for Checkout
As excited as I am to let your students start checking out books, I feel that it is important to teach the children how to be self-sufficient in the library. Therefore, I'd like for you to book a session or two in the next couple of weeks for me to teach them about the library procedures and expectations. Your children will check out at the end of each of these lessons. Please use my Book Me calendar to book lessons at a time that is convenient to you.
After those first few lessons, your children are welcome to come in to check out individually or in small groups (5-ish people). When they come in independently from you, the procedure is for them to bring their iPad set to a seven minute timer. During those seven minutes, I will help the students find books that they want and give them individualized attention as best I can. Hopefully they will return to you with books they cannot wait to read! Many teachers find that sending a reading group on a certain day works well for their classroom. I am able to help children better when there are fewer in the room, and less time is wasted than when whole classes come at once. We tend to take 20-25 minutes for whole class check-out, whereas students would only miss 7 minutes per week coming in small groups.
